Why do cats make weird noises while looking at prey through the window?

Have you ever heard a cat while it's sitting on a window sill, looking at birds or another animals outside? Their noises wrinkle and their cheeks bunch up. They bare their teeth and they start making this weird little noise that sounds similar to "aye-aye-aye-aye-ayeeeeee!" It's freakin' weird and also very funny. The first time I saw my cat do it, I thought he was having a stroke. I'd never seen anything do anything even remotely similar to that behavior before. I suppose they're frustrated over not being able to attack the bird, chipmonk or other wee beastie that's safe from them and are telling them something like, "If I were out there, you'd be lunch!"

Our female cat makes noises at squirrels and and it sounds like a cross between a squirrel noise and a bird chirp. I thought it was cool when she started doing it. Funny thing is, often the squirrels will answer her back!

LOL, I think that is exactly what they are saying. I think it's penned up aggravation at the fact they know they can't get them, but how badly they want to. So I reckon they set at the window and vocalize to them selves what they would do if only they were free.

It's a common thing. I've observed it very often in my cats. It's supposed to be a reflexive action mimicking the killing bite. So your last comment is probably spot on! :)
