Am I weird? Or is this sort of normal???

I read a fair amount, and for the past couple years, I've kept a database of all the books I've read.
I know, this doesn't seem like to bad an idea, it just that every time I finish a book, and I enter it into the database I stop and wonder if I'm the only one who does this? or are there other people out there who do something similar.
For those who like stats, as of today, since starting this a couple years ago, I've read 84 with a total of 37823 pages. Now, does knowing this useless bit of info make me weird??? :-)

I don't think this is weird at all! I think it's kind of cool and it probably just makes you feel complete for doing it, too, huh! I don't exactly do the exact things that you do but every time I start a new book I write in the inside cover the date I started reading the book then the ending date I finished the book. Doing this helps me to go back and look later (because I often read books over in case I feel like I've missed something) and if I read the book really fast that means that I really liked this book and I couldn't put it down! If it took me a while to read the book that means that it was ok because I finished it but I probably had to push my self to read the rest of it because I wasn't that interested...am I weird?? LOL

Yep.. join the weird club :) I started it as a use for my new access skills, but also because I found I was occasionally reading the same book twice since they had different covers at the library. I also record the date I finish too, but not when I start it. Oh well, theres no point changing things now.. lol.

Actually -- that's a really good idea. I'm always seeing books on ebay or other sites and wondering "did I read that one yet?". If they don't describe at least a bit of the plot, I often have no idea! If I had a database like yours, I could just search there for the title and find out.

LOL -- seems you know me all too well already! I just finished logging the recent books that I've read. I'm using the categories of title, author, date started, date finished, number of pages, and rating. What categories do you have on yours?

Just had a hunch you might do something like this.. lol.. Categories in mine.. Thats whats makes mine a little weird. There is nothing really useful. I have the title, author, date published (who knows why??? actually I do know why. I had just finished reading a book that was released late 70's and he had modernized it and re-released it with the same name), number of pages, and when I finished reading it. I don't have when I started it, nor a comments section, so my list could be a lot better. Make sure you place a comments section - I'm now kicking myself I didn't!

Thanks... I guess when you put it like that it does seem a very good idea. Have fun starting yours :)

You're not weird at all..and if you are it's the good kind of weird! I'd actually do that myself (I read and have read a LOT of books) but I just don't seem to have the time. A friend of mine actually just discovered an online site that you can catalogue all the books you own (or have read) up to 200 (after that there's a fee). I was thinking about doing it but I'm cheap and I know I've read far more than 200! Maybe some day I'll get around to putting down all the books I've read (although sadly I don't have access or excel). Welcome to the weird club! Isn't it nice here?!

LOL.. I was actually thinking of making my one into a website, since it is already a online database. I would be easy to make into one for other people to use...
Thanks for the feedback and the inspiration to start another website! ;)

I think it's a good idea to keep track of what you've read. I read a lot of books and I sure wished I'd thought of keeping a record of what I've read.
Keep it up. It's not weird. It's unique.

Thanks for the feedback. Good to hear someone else thinks it's a good idea. :)
BTW, I've decided to make a website out of my idea (sounds good saying it's my idea anyways...) that anyone can enter the books they've and keep track of them... as well as having a few other cool features..
If you interested add me as a friend and PM and I'll let you know what its ready.
Same goes for anyone else who wants to use my soon to be new site :)

I don't think it's weird. My mom used to keep a notebook of all the trashy romance novels she read. She said it was becuase all the covers looked the same, and all the titles were also so similar that she could never keep track of what she had already read.
I think it's a good idea.

Good point. Although I haven't read a trashy romance novel, I'd also bet the story lines are almost the same too.. she falls in love with the guy, then make love in Paris (or some other romantic city) and live happily ever after... :-)

Well first they hate each other...They he rescues her...then they fall in love...
She loved historical ones, so there is always a knight, or a pirate, or some kind of lord involved. Gotta love those "bodice rippers" LOL!

Wow you have a tendency to become and obssessive compulsive but i guess your not. Its a little bit weird but hey its just okay to have that recorded maybe someday you get something useful for it in the future. Maybe you get the title with the most pages read for the past soemthing. LOL

You're right, I'm not obsessive-compulsive, although I just joked about it with someone else who said I was. I feel a little guilty cause I don't think they get it.. oops...
Thanks for the feedback...

LOL.. I think my next database will be one to store all the things I've been called today over this post.
I am strange, obsessive-compulsive, anal-retentive freak.. I think I got them all.. lol.. But I suppose I was asking for it by asking if I weird... ;-)

Hi. I do not think it is weird. I don't keep a database like you but I do keep track of the books I read. Notto mention the movie collection me and my hubby started awhile back. I label all of them so when we have our own house we'll set up this family room where all the books we have read and collected will be there. Perhaps it just shows how an organized person you are. In my opinion, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. :)

Thanks for the kind words. I just wish they were true. I am so unorganized its not funny!!! Perhaps this is my one attempt at break through to the organized side...
Its good to hear that I am not the only one who is like this... :)

somewhat, yes. : but hey, some people always consider others weird or somewhat like it. seriously, i can say, that's just one of the things you do to keep yourself busy. you might as well do something better than merely doing nothing. i say doing totally nothing most of the time is much wierd than doing something like what you are doing. and as far as i know, you are even lucky that you have a computer for i have a colleague before that somewhat does the same thing that you do, keeping track of what you have read, but on something like a slambook or soemthing like that, whatever you call it. in other words, she has volumes of them already, can you believe that? so if you think you are weird, think about the patience and commitment to what that colleague of mine is doing for nothing but merely a plain hobby she loves.

Thanks for that profound advice :) I suppose doing this is better then doing nothing which is kind of weird. I couldn't imaging keeping a list of anything without a computer to help... :)

I started keeping a record of the books I read, only because I found myself buying the ones I had already read.
No you aren't wierd, people keep track of different things they do in many different ways, you just keep track of your reading stats...Nothing wierd about that.

Been there, done that. I fairly good at remembering a book based on its cover, but when some of my fave authors have the same book published buy different publishers it can be a little tricky to keep track of them ;)

Good point. I probably should add a comments section to make keeping track or good and bad authors... Thanks for the feedback! :)

No, I don't think that's weird. It just proves how much you love your books and how much you enjoy reading. One time while I was in high school, I ended up making card catalogs for all my books so that it would be easier to find them. It was kind of like library catalogs. I realized later that it was hard work and ended the idea abruptly. But then, I did manage to assign numbers to all my books, so that they did look as if they were library books.

I don't think you are weird. I keep a note book with every book I have read. I make notes about the ones I really liked and would read again. I also note about the author. I think this is just what readers do.
But I will say one thing it is interesting that you know how many pages you have read.

Thanks for making me feel normal... the page numbers I admit is a little odd, but I'd only do that on a computer. If I was doing this in a notebook like yourself, I wouldn't even consider it ;)

I used to keep a journal of the books I had read, and if I liked them or if they were just "meh". I think it's a great idea to keep a database though, much easier to access .I also find myself part way through a book thinking...I think I've read this before. Also I used to belong to a group of friends who did this round robin thing where we would each write down 3 books we liked , what genre they were and why we recommended them, then send the list of books on to the next person on the reading list. Eventually the list ended back at the beginning and that person photocopied it and sent the fill list to each participant. Learn about a lot of good books that way... but a data base would have been easier.

Thanks.. interesting that you used the word secure, before doing this list I was totally insecure.... actually wait, that wasn't the list's fault, that must have been something else. lol..
Thanks for the advice :)
