I am going to start up World of Warcraft and wanted to be a Shaman because I play as a shaman in the Trading card game and kick some serious butt. What should I do in the game to become good? What skills to get? What race, and side (horde or not). Anything to help me out would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

for leveling I suggest you put your points and money into battle first as that will help you grind when you have to as you cannot guarentee you will find a group and when you get to a higher level and start raiding you can respec to another like healing if your guild needs more healers or you can stay as battle etc.

I think play style should determine how to spec (where to place the talent points) of your shaman. By that, do you intend to do mostly raids or mostly PvP? When in-game, will you be mostly soloing quests or mostly grouped with others? Will you be seeking membership in the premiere guilds on your server?
I will be candid and say the raiding guilds prefer Restoration spec'd shaman. My own Shaman is Elemental/Restoration spec'd. I like to solo, but often, I am grouped as healer. I find that flexibility suits me.
If the areas you choose to place your talent points don't work out, you can always re-spec.

Try a Tauren Shaman on the Horde side, you'll actually get one of the most useful active racial skill in the game - Ground Stomp.
You have to know what role you want to focus on and what appeals you most. If you want to be a healer then you need to get healing gear and skills. Same goes to a Battle Shaman where you need to get more damage-dealing weapons and an armor with more defense and stamina stats.

Good luck and Happy leveling.
