Self representing artists?

OK so how many of us out there are self representing? Meaning you are a working artist, not just a hobbyist, but have no representation. How do you actually get a real live show up and running? How are you gutsy enough to get out there and shop your work around yourself? I've done lots of on-line stuff but walking into a gallery and trying to hook up a show feels a uncomfortable to me. Is this why representation is important? snerk ah well perhaps we should all do one thing that scare us everyday eh?

I've also done a lot of online things. I've also been in juried art shows, non-profit galleries and am going to have my own show later this year, hopefully. I am a little uneasy about that but plan to go through it. A lot of this has come about by knowing someone who shows or wants to show art. As for galleries, make sure you do your research. A lot of galleries aren't taking on new artists. Also, make sure they show the kinds of art that you do. I would suggest getting into a non-profit gallery or two and showing there for a while if you haven't done that already. They are definately less intimidating, though you may not make many sales. Tell everyone you're an artist and show them your online gallery, that should definately help.

thanks so much for your input, I was thinking of starting with coffee shops, or the like before actually hitting up a "gallery" per se'.

That's a good idea. Building up a resume will help you get into the gallery you want.
