Have you ever been burgled?

Leading on from a recent discussion here about WebMann's strange bike thief, it got me thinking about the time 15 years ago, when I had my house broken into. I wondered how many other people this had happened to, and how did it make you feel? For example, - were you scared in your own house aftwerwrds, did it make you want to move because your privacy had been violated? From my own point of view, I was just relieved that no one was in the house at the time, and that no one was hurt, - luckily even my two old cats that I had at the time, were out, and came to no harm. However, I was devastated about my Grandmother's jewellery, as she had passed away a year before, and left me all her jewellery, all of which was taken. Stuff like the TV, and the VCR was insured, and could be replaced, but no one could ever replace the sentimental value of that jewellery. So tell me your stories.

Oh how I know what you felt like!
We were burgled once, a few years ago, but they took the kind of stuff that could be sold very quickly - laptops, PS2, hifi system, digital camera... but nothing that had some sentimental value to us. In our house, we used to have glass pieces worth thousands but they took a box of Christmas decorations instead. Which I think is kind of cute.
We even got part of it back when the police caught the last few.
However, I was very recently mugged. I'm still annoyed about this because as they stole my handbag (which was a present that I loved), I also lost not only my phone, camera and the lot, but also the photos that were in my wallet!!!!!! There was a very very old train card that I had when I was four with my picture on it, along with a photo, that had been taken by a professional, of my sister when she was younger and lots of things like that.
I'm still incredibly annoyed about this, and I still wish I could smash their faces in. Shame they were never caught.

That must have been bad. And I know what you mean - it's sentimental stuff like the train card that you can't replce, that upsets you more than money in that kind of situation.

Years ago when i was a little kid our house was robbed - mom was in the hospital and my sister and brother were at school and dad was at work- I was with my grandma, someone who knew us broke in. They took ots of jewelry, and some antiques from Italy and money. My parents were beside themselves for years, nothing was ever found.

That must have been so horrible, if the people actually knew your family, - an even worse violation.

Thats a shame. That what everyone says when their house has been broken into or if there was a fire. It's the irreplacable stuff like jewellry and stuff that is passed down to you. I have never been broken into (as she knocks on wood) but I remember about 15 or so years ago my Aunt's house was and she was so devastated. To her she felt like she had been raped having someone go through her personal stuff and all her drawers. It was very difficult too because the police came and they were asking what was missing. Well she had so much stuff in that little house it was hard to notice things right away.

It is true there is a feeling of violation - someone going through your personal stuff. It is a horrid feeling.

How sad it happened to you and your relaives. No experience about burglary. I don't want the thought of it because I don't know what might happen if one goes into our house. He is getting himself into trouble because he could be shoot if he did it to us.

It happened back in 1989, when we lived in a slummy neighborhood and my daughter was just born. We weren't home at the time and the robbers made themselves at home by taking milk; diapers a brand new watch and phone along with our VCR and some tapes and my husbands weapons.

Yes, we were burgled three times in Africa but then it seems to be the national occupation there!! haha
Luckily, the main targets are clothing and drink which are easily replaced. However, we did loose some personal kit as well which was annoying.
The worst bit is the horrid feeling of some stranger in your house going through your things. A sort of dirty feeling.

Hey Rosie, I have been broken into but they didn't get anything.
I had been out at a guitar jam the night before and only got home at day break so I was sleeping in. I heard a pounding on the door but thought it was a friend of my son's and figured they would go away, as I was the only one home.
I heard it ago and it annoyed me that they would do it again if no one answered, so I went up stairs in my underwear and without my glasses. I was just going to yell through the door, but when I got up stairs and walked into the kitchen there were three guys standing there.
My first words were: "What the f*** are you doing in my house?" Me standing in my underwear and three guys I could barely see without my glasses.
Well they ran faster than I have seen people run before. I must have given them quite an adrenilne rush.
They were pounding to make sure no one was home so they could robb me, but they didn't expect anyone after pounding for so long.
Not sure what would have happened if they didn't run. If I had realized they were theives I would have called the police.

How sad about your grandmother's jewelry. Thankfully, we've never been burgalized in our home. My husband's car stereo and his tool box was from the trunk of his car. It's always such a scary thing. We felt violated. And we moved out of that house a few weeks afterwards, because a lot of people had been burgalized. And it was a high class neighborhood too. It's sad what people do to one another.

No i haven't.
My wife family has and alot expensive things stole. she was shanking and really scared etc.
Personally they won't be able to get with the traps i like to set. this is when we get our own house, although from time to time i do 'em here.
Baseball bats beside my bed too. (i would use it to defend my parents house too)

My mother told me that when I was a baby, a group of thieves aboard a big truck sneakded into our house at dawn. She said that she and I woke up, and she told them that they can take whatever they want, but not harm us. I was crying like hell, so one guy made me smell something to put me back to sleep. My mom told me that the thieves wiped our house clean. The neighbors thought we were just moving out, so they didn't suspect anything. From then on, I had difficulty drinking milk because whatever it is that they made me smell affected my system, making me lactose intolerant. My mother said that that was one of the worst experiences in her life.

Well i am never been burgled. But one of my neighbor's whole house and bike was stolen in one night. They all went to vacation and we all went to grandpa house. So when we came back we found them in big dilemma. There whole jewelery was stolen which worth in millions. I just pray to God that such thing should not occur to my family and me.
