Photographs - Is it a Messenger of Truth or Illusion?

A picture paints a thousand words and that's why it used by the media to report facts to the public. We have throughout history that indeed photos had brought us to the events in that happened in the news. People grew aware of the poverty in Africa because of photos of starving children. It allowed people to experience the pain and suffering that poverty had inflicted in Africa.
However, with the advent of technology, photos can now be enhanced to hide or eradicate imperfections of the subject. For example, a fashion model could hide her bad skin by digital photography. Worse, some more people create fictitious photos depicting aliens, mermaids and ghosts. This is why, right now, people had grown doubtful in the photos they see because it could be just another man's illusion. What's your opinion?
