The penny black in England was the first as far as I know followed by the two penny blue.
With inflation that works out to be much the same now I expect.
I costs about a US dollar to send a letter first class mail in the UK now!

smacksman is correct.....
The "Penny Black" was the first regular postage stamp, issued by Great Britain in 1841.
