You need to check out the messageboard forum at this site: http://www.WAHM.com
There you will find all the different legit work from home jobs that many stay at home moms and even dads do. You will also be able to read through the whole site and gather up valuable information on 'how not to get scammed', with lesson #1 being you should never pay someone who is offering you a job--that is a key point is knowing that the company is scamming you and not a real legit job. However, you may have to invest money into legit companies like lets say "tupperware", "Avon", "Partylite", "Pampered Chef", etc...
When you are looking for a legit work from home job, the first thing you need to think about is what are your skills--hobby wise and proffessionally? Myself, I work in the medical profession, but am married for over 19 years to a man in the military. So, sometimes I am not always able to find work in my profession because of where we are stationed (right now overseas). I tapped into my writing hobby and I freelance write, and because I have medical experience, I often find writing gigs dealing with medical topics. Sometimes, I use bidding sites to bid for writing gigs, and I've built up steady clients.
Maybe you can start a babysitting/daycare type of situation in your home. You can go and get yourself certified to do daycare in your house, which will make you more legit and a more trusting business.

OH, one more thing I should have mentioned. For many years, my husband and I worked off-shifts, meaning he worked days and I worked eves (3-11pm), or he worked eves and I worked days. We never needed a babysitter when my kids were younger--we could afford one but chose to be there for our kids and enjoy our careers. Maybe you can find a part-time evening job or even one on the weekends.
