What are your feeling about banning pit bulls?

Our town just banned pit bulls and then grandfathered the people in who already had them as long as they met strict quidelines for keeping their pit bulls enclosed. I have met some very sweet pit bulls that listen better than my dogs but then again I must admit that I am afraid of them. I can't make up my mind. What is your opinion?

I don't know what should be done, honestly. I think that there are mean and nice animals of all breeds, not just pit bulls. I realize that pit bulls have been bred to be more naturally agressive. But as you said, there are many sweet pit bulls out there who wouldn't harm a fly. I don't really like the idea of any breed of dog or any animal being 'banned' anywhere. It just sounds so extreme. But I guess that if there really are a lot of cases of that type of dog causing problems in a given area, the authorities feel that they must do something to curtail the problem.

i say ban the deed . not the breed.... pits have gotten a bum rep. because some breeders/trainers......real dumb a**es.... have brought them up wrong and trained them to be mean... and yes i said brought. we bring our dogs up like we raise kids. we teach them to behave . they learn right from wrong from us

It's not the dog that makes the pit bull mean, it's the way they are trained. I think it's a shame that it's come to this. Unfortunately there are a lot of people out there that raise them to fight and to attack. These people, not the dogs, are the problems. It's a shame that these people can't be banned!

I agree with Lovingit, I wish we could ban the people instead of the pit bulls. But since the breed is so abused I think it is a good idea to ban it. That will mean fewer pit bulls are bred and there will be fewer of them to put people at risk. It will also mean that there will be fewer pit bulls that are abused. They are used in dog fighting and it is a cruel, horrible life for a dog. Better to not have any of them than to let them be abused like that.
