I'm interested in writing some e-books for a couple websites I'm building. Have any of you any experience in this area? I'm more interested in how to market and promote my ebooks but as a first timer I would be interested in any how to sites on how to create e-books i.e. tools, password protection, etc.

I have 5 e-books published on www.lulu.com. Probably best if you have a look at this first, rather than getting technical about things you haven't experienced. They do it all for you, the PDF conversions and covers,(in my case from Word to PDF)and you can do hard copy too. lulu gets a commission on sales, but otherwise it's free. You pick your price, they get 20% for e-books, and you've already saved a lot of money on althernative means of publication. This process is extremely simple. For a look at the finished product, http://www.lulu.com/wanderlaugh is my store front. Also note that I used the same basic cover for two books, which I'll have to correct at some stage, but that can be done easily, too. **** Remember to read the FAQ.**** There are a few things that aren't obvious at first.

Ahhh! Should have mentioned, you can link directly to your books on any website, just remember to use the storefront URL, not your account URL.

lol... I was responding to suggest lulu.com but it looks like wander beat me too it. I've been checking this site out for my own books and found it really easy to understand and easy to work with.

Yes try lulu. Also look for forums which you can gather feedback and use networking sites to promote your sales. I do free poetry anthologys with my site, the aims to get spotted or spot a poet which has talent. I've used lulu for a few e-books of my own and if you network and promote it. You'll do fine. =) You can create pdfs by using microsoft word or many other word processors. there's quite a few although i'd suggest these if you haven't done them before as most of the others involve building them with documents and images etc Kudos! ~Joey

Thanks for the second opinion on lulu.com. I'm also looking into my different pdf creation programs. I found one called Foxit PDF Editor which looks promising. They also have a Foxit PDF reader which totally replaces Adobe PDF...load so much faster as well. Cheers!
