Recycling computers and electronics

I was just watching a TV show on recycling computers. Most people do not recycle their old computers and these machines end up getting mixed with the rest of the garbage.
The problem is that computers contain some materials that do not dissolve for years. There is a company here in Canada that specializes in destroying the equipment of other companies. Of course, such service is not free.
The government of France imposed a few months ago a special tax that is meant to pay for recycling computers. This tax amounts to a tiny percentage of the price of computers and other commodities. Customers, then, need just to take their old computers, TVs,...to any electronics store. This latter is obliged to accept these machines and to forward them to a recycling center. I find this idea great.

Yes donation is another alternative. Some people here too donate their old computers to the salvation army and to another charity organism called Village des valeurs. Actually, village des valeurs collects the donations from people's homes. I don't know if the salvation army does that too.

I did not know that it existed outside Quebec, as the name they use here is french. I went there a few times, to buy books, I had some interesting bargains. I would not buy a computer from there though, their computers are really very old.

We also have facilities to recycle cell phones here, which I also think is an excellent idea.
