What does "the good old days" mean to you?

Those were the days when we didn't have a care in the world. We would lie in the grass on a hill and watch the clouds with our best friend. We would try to see who could find different animal shapes in the clouds. There was "skinny dipping" in the creek or pond. On Saturdays we would go to the movies for a nickel. And what great movie stars there were in those days, although we thought it was all real. There were guys like Gene Autry, Audie Murphy, The Lone Ranger and Tonto, The Disco Kid, and who could ever forget the King? No, not Elvis, although he was part of those days too. The Real King- Roy Rogers, King of the Cowboys and his horse Trigger. There was Dale Evans, Andy Divine and his jeep Nellie Bell. Those were also the days when you could get a coke for a nickel too. On the radio we would listen to the antics of Amos and Andy, and the mystery shows like Boston Blackie, and finally The Shadow Knows. And then there was Saturday night listening to The Grand Ole Opry. It seemed to us like everything was good and if anything bad did come around, one of those guys at the Saturday movies would take care of it. I remember the first book I got. It was called "Radio Pals Marooned". That book started a life long interest in electronics for me. I am sure you have some great memories of "the good old days" too. What do you remember?

To me the good old days mean the 80's. When life was less stressful & things in general mattered more. I find myself always reminiscing about the 80's almost all the time. Mostly when I'm not feeling not all to well & I'm under the weather & I need a pick me up I'll start to think of things. Places like my childhood in Saskatchewan for example.. The best days of my life! . . I remember toys I used to play with as a kid. I absolutely loved my popple and my cabbage patch kid to name a few of my favorite toys. As I had so many others that I would classify as some of my favorites. I loved those toys so much that when we moved in to the place we live now.. One of my parents made me keep all of my stuffed animals/toys behind instead of being able to take them with us when we had indeed moved to the new destination they had wanted to move to. Thank god I had stumbled across e-bay because I ended up getting one for Christmas last year to replace the one I had to leave behind as a kid. I have been without one for a very long time before we found this one so it was a special thing when I opened that box and seen the very toy I grew up staring right back at me. I also find myself revisiting the good old days again because there are shows on nowadays that are just completely ridiculous. Certain ones nowadays I cannot understand why they are still on television. They don't stand up to these ones I used to like when I was a kid. The cartoons from my childhood were more interesting and more meaningful than any of the ones that have been put out these days. They weren't just good animation, the shows I had watched back then we're genuinely charged with issues that were relevant to kids those days. Nowadays it seems like they are making cartoon with the intention of just putting something out there without a message to get across. They're doing it mainly for entertainment purposes and that's it in my opinion. I find the good old days also had associated with it a feeling. I remember the 80's having this sort of effect on me and it still does. Thinking about those days puts me into a better frame of mind. They comfort me and remind me of a time when life wasn't so hectic. Where you could actually have a minute to yourself instead of having to go and work your butt off until you get a moment off to yourself. Sometimes even now as an adult I don't find I am able to have that quite as often as I'd like.. I also remember how when I was younger.. I had loved animals & when I was younger I was surrounded by them as my Grandparents used to own a farm & I used to go with them on a regular basis just to see the animals that they had. I also remember how I always had a puppy of my own regardless of if they got taken away from me here or there. That really disappointed me because there wasn't one person who would care enough about me to let my puppies stay. I think the one I have now is one of the cuddliest puppies out there and I would give anything to just lay down beside her and take a break. If there's one thing I need here and there it's a cuddle session with my puppy, especially when life comes down on me really hard. In conclusion, these examples are some of the things that remind me of my own "good old days" growing up as a child. I really wish every day would be like a session where it involved just saying something that I wished for and have it come true! . . Thanks for allowing me to share! xx

Thanks for sharing. I find it interesting that you are about the age of my own children and to hear you talk about the 80's as I would talk about the 50's. If my parents were around now, and they are also missed, they would probably remember the 20's as we remember the 50's and 80's. We seem to remember the "old days" as being the time of our childhood. I think we need to visit the "old days" often so we will remember children growing up right now will think back to their childhoods as the "old days" for them too.

My "good old days" would be late 70s early 80s. I was born in 1970 so this would be where I can remember things really well. I, too, would lie on the ground and watch the clouds and see what shapes you could find. I lived in a very small town (400 people)...me and my friends would go to the river and fish. That was so fun...it was more about being with the boys than anything. LOL Back then, parents didn't have to worry as much about random violence to their kids as they do now. My mom would send me and my sister outside to play on our swingset and we would be out there for HOURS! Pretending that our swingset was our ship and we couldn't touch the grass because it was infested with sharks LOL We didn't have a lot of money, so I didn't get to the movies a lot until dating age...80s music was THE BEST! I still love listening to the "hair bands". LOL Saturday morning cartoons...not like now where you can get cartoons on 50 channels 24 hrs a day...we had to wait until Saturday mornings and mom would cook pancakes and we would watch cartoons all morning. SO many memories! WOW! Thanks for making me have a flash back. :) That was nice. Thank you

Thanks for your response. It just goes to show all ages had their "good old days". You are about my children's age and your response makes me think back to all of the things they did in those bygone days. For me, the old days are the 50's. Thanks for your memories. Remember, we always need to help others make memories for their future. It is now your turn with your children.
