Giving away projects as gifts

Do you think that people really enjoy when we give them cross stitch pictures that we've made for them?
I've gotten a couple of great responses, some quite lukewarm, and some that I think were appalled that I didn't give them some flashy store bought trinket instead of something that I poured hours of time into. (Oh, and money, if you consider the cost of the pattern and materials.)
I don't really know if people understand how much time and dedication goes into a completed project. I personally love when I get something homemade because I know that there was probably more effort put into it then just running to a big box store, but maybe it's just me!

Well I love giving away crafts I've made a gifts too. I had great responses from my friends though. They always see mee making stuff and they just know how much effort I put into it. Probably that's why they really appreciate it.

Everyone I have ever given a hand-made gift to has gushed over it. I crochet afghans mostly, so it's great for baby showers, weddings, Christmas... Sometimes I have had to buy a gift (timing and things) and I think the people have been dissappointed at that!

I love it when my friends and family take the time to create something just for me -- it is such a thoughtful thing to do! I guess it might be a bit awkward if someone receives something that really doesn't go with their decor or that they truly don't care for since if the giver knows them well enough to make them something handcrafted, they also know them well enough to notice if the item isn't displayed in their house. The handmade items that I've gotten as gifts were always something that the person knew I would enjoy, though, so I've never had a problem with that!

Honestly I get the same responses too when I gave people my work of art. Sometimes, I feel hurt when they don't appreciate it. But it doesn't stop me from giving presents which I really made. I just comfort myself by those people who really appreciate my effort. Thanks for sharing. And welcome to the community. I hope you'll enjoy your stay here.

I think in todays society people are so numb to real life and what really matters that all they see is flashy shiny trinkets and what nothing less. In a world where people are always prone to want the bigger and the better when they recieve a heartfelt home made present it doesn't sparkle of monetary value...or it doesn't give them that sense of false security like a new pair of manolo blahniks would do when they would go out with their girlfriends. I personally love homemade things and I agree with your concept.

Thanks for that. I don't want to seem cheap, and I don't feel that I'm being cheap with my gifts. Heaven knows they took longer to make then a new pair of Manolo Blahniks! And, they're going to last longer.
I hate that we're becoming more and more of a material society. Tis not better to give, but yet to recieve and the more money spent the better. Oh well! I'm going to keep putting my heart into things and hope that one day the appreciation will be there.
At the same time, I do not create to be praised, but yet to please and delight the recipiant. Such a fine line to walk!

I always used to make presents for my family and friends when I lived in South Africa, as they did for me. We all knew each other and made things that we knew the recipient would like. I have spent hours embroidering things, but they have always been appreciated.
I did a birth sampler on commission once. Never again. It was a Beatrix Potter one and I added in two more characters as they thought it was a bit empty. It took me 40 hours to finish it (I was very scrupulous in keeping time)At the time basic unskilled wage was R10 an hour, but I knew they'd never pay it, so I charged them R5 and they still were rather shocked that I was asking R200.
When my daughter got married, I embroidered her train, ring pillow and dresses and headbands for the flowergirls. It took months, but was an act of love.
Then I moved to Scotland. The attitude here seems to be 'Oh is that all' Fine I don't expect people to fall all over me, but I get the impression that they don't value it as much and think you're being cheap. I did a picture for a friends new baby and she didn't seem very happy about it, I really felt like saying give it back and I'll go buy you something!! Contrary to that I had embroidered a couple of bought vests for an acquaintance in SA and he and his wife were thrilled!
I don't bother to make gifts for anyone but my own family now, which is really sad.

I have not had any bad reactions as of yet, but I crochet scarves and give them away. I make them small, skinny, and in colors that I think the person will like. The yarn that I use is quite expensive and very soft. I guess if someone didn't like one of the scarves that I made I would still make them, I just would think twice about spending my time making something for that person. I love to get presents that were made, I feel like the person actually had to think about me, it is a lot easier to just go in a store and buy a present, homemade means more to me.

I think homemade gifts are wonderful and that more people should give them out. When someone gives me something home made I know they put a lot of time and effort into it and they must really care about me :D

I make lots of crafty gifts... Right now I'm into wood crafts-- the Big ones- Mostly primitive.. You can buy these types of things for $50 and up at craft sales.. I also do some smaller crafts too. I give them each year for Christmas-- Most people can't wait to get them.. I love to give them too..
I also embroider-- wall hangings, pillows, quilts, etc. You are so right-- homemade gifts take alot of heart and time to complete. They certainly are not cheap. The cost of wood itself-- At times I wonder if it's worth it because of the cost. But then I see people's face light up and I remember oh yeah it's so worth it.
I have had a few few people at work go like-- oh thanks-- those are the people who didn't get any gift the next year.
There are 4 of us families that get together each year for Christmas. Each one of us girls hand makes something for the other-- Its the best. these truly are the best gifts I get throughout the holidays (besides the ones my daughter makes)
Great question!

For me much better to give a gift that you made than you buy in a store, I am so happy when my niece given me an old flower vase but she put other designed, she painted it and decorated it with some flowers. I like it its look beautiful, and I know that she loves me so much because of the effort she do to me...then this time also I learned if you have an old things that you think you can use again just decorate them and put it some paint instead to throw them away....
