What's your no. reason for buying/reading a book?

Do you buy/read a book because of the author? Or because it is recommended by a friend or a celebrity? Are you a spur-of-the-moment buyer or do you surreptitiously read chapters of a book first before making your decision? Or are you the type to base your choice on reviews? personally, i usually go for books because they were written by my favorite author (and therefore it's highly likely that i will love it) or recommended by another reader whose word i trust. occasionally i look at what the critics say first before making the plunge. what about you guys?

No' I don't go for author, I give slight overreading to book in library/shop or according to summary given in coverpages I decide whether to buy or not.

sorry for this mess folks... by the time i realized i had duplicated my topic for discussion, it was too late. i was actually trying to edit the question i had raised (by inserting "1" after no.) just a few seconds earlier. for those who want to contribute to this topic, please proceed to the other thread -- there are more respondents there you see. thanks for your forbearance.

I like to go with authors I'm familiar with. But I will also browse the library and book stores and read the front jacket blurbs or the back of the book blurbs. It if sound interesting I'll probably get it. I never pay attention to the critics.
