Why do people hate Walmart so much?

I was reading an article that Walmart was name one of the 50 best companies to work for in Canada. This is apparently based primarily on confidential employee surveys. So, if that's the case, why do some people have such a hate on for Walmart?

I know Walmart gets a lot of bad publicity but I personally like them. The prices are low compared to many other chain stores, I think the service is the same as most other large stores, and they have just about everything I need in one location.

In my opinion, the problem arises when we value low prices over good working conditions, just business practices and basic good stewardship of resources. My family lives on one *very* average income, and we choose to save money in ways other than shopping at Wal-Mart. I understand that not everyone has that option - for example, single-parent families - but I, personally, feel compelled to "vote" with my shopping choices, and I vote no to Wal-Mart.

Oh - BTW, I do agree with other posters that WM was a very different company years ago - but I cannot support them now.

In America walmart is known for having very low wages...and other than that they tend to build their stores everywhere, even in small towns not truly needing such a huge supercenter store and then the store puts all local merchants out of business essientially killing towns

I like shopping at WalMart for certain things because it's much cheaper there. I think some people hate walmart because I heard they are known to have their clothing made in factories overseas that are illegal where men,women,and children only get paid cents per hour. A teacher I had in college once told our class that walmart does that. So that could be a reason people hate it. Also because a lot of walmarts took over old locations that weren't doing good business. Also I saw on the news that a lot of cities have opened a walmart in quiet areas which brought people from different areas into that one area that used to be quiet. So people who are living near the new walmart get annoyed by that.

I don't understand why people hate Walmart so much. Mostly I think it's because they don't like how they run small businesses out of business. I work for Walmart and its the best job I've ever had, sure its not perfect but no job is.
