I would like to hear from others who have bred chi's. I have 3 of them and have had 1 litter of 4 pups. Do you enjoy breeding? What and how did you prepare for the births?

Our two long-haired chihuaua's had a litter of 5 in January of this year. Mom was about 1 1/2 years old. One baby did not make it, even with the vet coming every few hours. The whole experience for us was great! We loved it. Rosa the mom, was so good! When I asked my husband the other day if he thought we should go for another litter he said, let do it. We were advised by our vet here in Mexico to put Rosa on Puppy Food with calcium supplements in the food (we had plyers and smashed a calcium tablet to mix with her food)about 2 weeks before her litter was due. About a week before the birth we did take her in and had an Xray. That's when the vet told us for sure she was going to have 4 babies and he thought there might be another one. One other good suggestion we got from a friend was use the adult diaper like pads. Like they use in the hospital sometimes if you've had a baby. They didn't like that so much for bedding as the suggestion was for, but ended up using it as their potty training place. We just used old towels for awhile as bedding, but their little toenails would catch. So, I was able to find some perfect little squares of not quite felt cotton and that worked the best. We are looking forward to the experience, again sometime this winter. pegasusflys

I never tried to breed my chi but I read and heard its very hard for the mummy chi to have babbies and if not cared for well she may die.
