I am a writer too and have decided that self publishing is the way to go. You have more control over what happens with your work. Many #1 authors got started by self publishing.
I have been researching the companies and Dog Ear Publishing has caught my attention. Their packages are reasonable, their share of profit lower than most, they print on demand so you don't have books laying around gathering dust and they place your work on Barnes and Nobles and Amazon which brings more exposure. Also, they are very good about keeping in contact with you on every aspect by email and phone.
I have 2 books that I have almost ready to go to them.
Good Luck!

To Lovesfreedom, what are the costs? I don't have much cash, but would consider self-publishing if a traditional publishinghouse turns down my manuscript.

I think this link below will help you some way to publish you on internet.
http://www.fonerbooks.com/thepath.htm
So many similar sites are there who help
writers like you who face the typical hurdle
in getting started and published.
Nowadays internet publication is cheaper and
easy to proceed and after recieving the comments
from so many net readers you can
think of printing the book as a hard copy.

Hey Kate,
I took the time to read some your writing on your web site. You are gifted and besides being a very good writer, have some degree of social responsibility. I'd be interested in reading your book.
To answer your question, there a couple of different ways. I think the major steps are this.
1. Have a couple of people not well known to you to read your book and give honest critism. (I would volunteer!) Family and firends can rarely be completely honest because their opinion is influenced by their closeness with you. See if the "objective" reviews are as good as you think or may cause you to modifiy your project.
2. If you still want to publish, you can try to do it yourself or get someone to do it.
a. If you have a good book, then look for an agent. You may have to pay them to read your book, but it is definitely worth it. I can direct you to reputable agents if you cannot find them. If they really like the book, they will help you get it published.
b. If you want to publish it yourself, then as suggested, get an ISBN number (costs money) and promote the book yourself. You may find you get a decent return or at least can make your investment back over time. There are numerous web sites to accomplish this in several different ways.
I wish you the best and please keep trying. Also, nice to see you on MyLot.

You could mail your book to several publishing companies that specialize in the genre in which you are writing.

why don't you try e-communication? also, getting an editor online should be really easy. that way, they can tell you if your writing even stands a chance with the publishing companies you are trying to reach.

You absolutely need to pick up a copy of the Writer's Market if you don't already have one. Everything you ever needed to know and then some is in that book regarding publishing your work. As a writer, it will prove your most important reference tool. Good luck.
