Our pediatrician said it was OKAY to switch our baby to whole milk. He is 13 1/2 months old. For now, he is on half formula/half formula! Is this okay as far as vitamin wise. I am giving him lots of table/finger foods. Should we be giving him additional vitamins? If so, what?? :) Any suggestions/tips would be very helpful!

I asked my pediatrician about that second stage of formula for older kids. She said that it's basically just a marketing ploy by formula companies to get people to buy formula for longer. As long as the baby is eating ok amounts and variety of food, they're fine switching to whole milk.

Definately. We switched our baby at 1 year to whole milk & she's been fine. She eats lots of regular food too, but she does love her milk. I know that it is said that a child should only have 24 oz. of whole milk & the rest reg. food, but my daughter drinks more than that & I think it's fine as long as your child is getting other sources of food. I've read that it's not safe to give children vitamins unless directed to by a Doctor, so before you do that, I would defiantely check with your pediatrician.

I think that it is alright to switch him. As long as your giving table foods and things i think that everything is alright. It has been a while since my boys were little so i have to really think back. I would just check with doctor the next time you go to make sure everything is a ok.

There's nothing wrong with giving your baby half whole milk/half formula. Especially if he's eating table/finger foods all the time. That's actually how I got my son to start drinking whole milk, I introduced a little milk into his formula and gradually increased it until he was drinking all milk and no formula.

I thought so but one of my friends on myspace messaged me --- sort of criticizing me and saying "don't you know there's formula for 9-24 month olds?" "And what about vitamins...is he getting enough" She made it sound like I was torturing him.

There is indeed formula specially made for that age group, I got a free sample in the mail and tried to give it to my son and he refused to drink it. Apparently it tastes a bit different! Your friend shouldn't get on your case about giving your son whole milk, especially since the doctor said you could and unless your friend is a doctor herself I don't know what makes her think her opinion is more valid. I'd just follow doctors orders as well as what YOU feel is best for your child.

Yes, most definitely. When they are a year old, it's good to switch them to whole milk. It will give them the nutrition they need at this age to grow. If he is getting a good balanced diet, there is no need for him to take any extra vitamins.
