If you were in a situation where your family despised the person that you were engaged to? What if they threatened to not speak to you or not have anything to do with your wedding? Would you call off the wedding or go through with it?

It would depend on why they despised the person I was engaged to. Starting a marriage with your spouse at odds with your family is not a good way to go. Since your family raised you for much longer than you have even known the person you plan to marry, I would certainly take their objections under consideration to determine if there is an real basis for them.
If there is, you would be wise to end the relationship, but if the family's objections are trivial or untrue, I would explain why you feel that way and go ahead with the wedding. Unless there is a valid reason for them to dislike the person you have chosen, they will probably adjust to your marriage sooner or later.
