have you tried any free antivirus? which one in your opinion work best?
i've tried avast, avg and antivir. i like antivir the best mainly because it is very user friendly and doesn't use a lot of memory & space.

I've used Avast!, AVG, ClamWin, and a few others that I can't put my finger on (which usually means they weren't all that good if I cannae remember them, right? :)).
I've been rather fond of recommending Avast for users who don't really dig into their computers, and make the computer do what they want it to do, because it is one of the easiest to set up, and it always does its virus database updates, with an audio reminder letting you know it's done.
Its interface is also fairly easy to navigate, making it just as easy to coerce newbies into remembering it, and keeping it running.
Because I am more of a *dig* *it* *in* person, I'm very used to things like ClamWin, and its sparse interface, simply because it's quiet, sits in the tray without any happy dancing junk, and does what it says without complaint.
AVG, however, has its own blessing, in the sense that it was developed more for an international environment, and was actually one of the only anti-virus applications, free or paid, that wasn't skipping files with international character sets. ;)

I would use either Avast or AVG. Avast is great in that it combines a anti-spyware and anti-virus in one. Most reviews show it to have not as strong of an engine though as AVG. My company is a Registered Microsoft Partner company. As a result, when working at removing particularly malicious threats, I spend time on the phone with Microsoft's engineers working through hijack this logs etc. Occasionally as we are talking working out the problem I ask them what their preference is on programs for their own home personal computers. There are few that actually use a paid for anti-virus program on their own home computers. The majority (by far) have told me that they use AVG. On one of my own home personal computers I use AVG. On my other one I currently have Avast. Have only used Avast on that computer for about two months. I have run AVG on the other computer ( and its two predecessors) for several years.
