I have always dreaded silence. For instance, whenever i am teaching a class or in a discussion and when silince sets in it feels creepy. Interactive discussions are ideal however, people say that silence is golden. How and in what context? I am reminded of a long-time ago movie, The House of Spirits. What do you do when silence sets in while having a lunch meeting with a client or teaching a class?

it used to creep me out, too, until i learned to be comfortable within its folds. i can be garrulous on occasion, but there are moments when i need silence. in fact i can be solitary even in the middle of crowds. also some people tend to clam up when they're unsure of themselves -- you know, to minimize the risk of making a mistake or offending anyone.
however, in case of interactive cmomunication, silence can be disheartening. maybe what you need is an icebreaker(?).
