Beyond the wider vocabulary, it shows you points of view and and allows you to understand points of views that you may never have had access to. In addition if you participate in a book club you can see how differently people respond to the same written work.

Reading is a great method of learning about other people and other cultures that we normally might not have a chance to learn about. Not just non fiction stuff, but even fiction books provide a great tool for learning about other cultures around the world. I think being well read makes you a more worldy person and really helps your understanding of world events.

Reading can expand the mind, improve the vocabulary, increase knowledge and give hours of entertainment. Books can stimulate the imagination in ways that movies and television never can. I can get lost in a book for hours, imagining the situations, the scenes, the people and the places.
These days people are more reliant on computers and television, this makes them lazy with english language, grammer and spelling. Reading books can drastically increase your word power and, the biggest bonus of reading a book is ...... they contain the written word and not txt spk. :-)

Reading is more than helpful to us! It gives us the chance to explore into a whole new world and it does not requires us to get up from our lazy chair or anything. Reading also improves one's vocabulary. I learnt many new words from reading so many books.
Reading is fun. Period.

Reading is the only entertainment medium that is also an essential life's skill. Research show that avid readers:

-have easier time in processing information
-have a better chance for a successful life
-develop an ability to feel and understand how other people think and fee
-tend to be more flexible in thinking and more open to new ideas

i think the main function of reading a book is having more knowledge. personally, i think you should only choose the things that you're gonna read. because if you're just gonna read tabloids or a comic book and you're already 15 - 16 years old then it wouldn't really be that knowledgeable. right now i'm really regretting the fact that i didn't make it a habit in at least reading one or two pages a day.
