Do you keep a diary or a journal? I've tried in the past and managed to keep a diary for a few years but gave up in the end. I heard from a friend recently that she had kept a dream diary for more than fifteen years which I found amazing. So, do you keep a diary, and if so, what type of diary and for how long have you been keeping this diary?

I never really kept a diary going. I do however write in a journal. I started my journal before I left NJ. I left there in umm,1970. I still write every day. I write a lot of my poems in my journal these days. One day soon I shall gather them all together and write a book. It would make for interesting reading.

I think a journal can be more interesting to keep than a diary, really. It gives you the scope to deal with a wider variety of issues.

I have a diary, an online one that's free. I've had it for over 2 years now. I write whenever I can and many times it's more then once a day. It's to vent and talk about stuff that I'm doing. And I read my friend's diaries too.

What's the difference between a diary and a journal? I don't understand since either can be done daily. How are they different?
I kept a diary as a teenage, and kept a journal for a couple of years during a divorce and a difficult time in my life. Now I have a blog, which doesn't have much in the way of personal things. Even that is hard to keep up with. I do so much writing as a career, plus on MyLot and other forums, that I don't spend much time writing about myself anymore.

I think a journal can be more wide-ranging and taking in other less personal topics than a diary. A diary is more about one's personal inner life, I think.

i used it write it regularly ... just not did that for a while now ... its almost a year since i have stopped writing...now i am planning to start it all over again ... its actually wonderfull to see personality developments at different stages ... something that we considered wrong earlier is right for us today and somehting that we considered right earlier is wrong for us today ...
that;s just too good
thanks for reminding me of having such a wonderful experience through out life ..
thanks

oh Lord, NO! There are a lot of things that can wrong with writing stuff down. What do you write, your inner most thoughts and feelings? And then somehow, somewhere someone gets a hold of it and reads stuff that you never meant for anyone to see/know. This happened to me when I was just a teenager, and my dad told me then and there, if it important enough for you to want to remember, then you will. Now if you need to jot down a thing or two in a journal to remind you of a work schedule or medication or something, that is different than a diary where you write to your id.

Yes, I suppose that could be a problem. I've never had to worry about other people reading my private notes; I don't think the people I lived with would have stooped so low as to read someone else's diary, however tempting it may have been.
It would be rather awful if it did happen, though. Just imagine writing something about someone and then that person reading it afterwards.

I've tried to keep one on of off most of my life. Usually more off than on. Lately though I've been having good consistency with keep an online journal. I have a couple blogs, some public, but I have one that is private where I write my inner-most thoughts. Helps keep me sane.

Yes, I keep a diary. I always feel better after writing in my diary. It's my therapy.

I don't want to put so much pressure on myslef. yes, we should record our memory but not leave it as burden.

when i was in high school, i also used to keep a diary. but then i stopped. i kept what i call now a "journal." well, it might seem like a diary but not really. in my diary, i keep an account of my experiences for the whole day. but in my journal, i keep almost everything! i think a journal is way cooler because it can cover almost everything about your personality.
