As a student, i can tell you that studying can be really, really stressful- especially if you're stuck in the same space all the time. It starts to feel really confining.
Also, most school libraries really aren't all that conductive to studying. They tend to be really boring places with blah lighting, monotonous noises, and musty smells. Not a pleasant place to spend a lot of time in.
Studying in a coffee shop has benefits. One, you get a change of scenery, which can take the boredom out of your studies and even give you a fresh perspective on the subject matter. Two, you have access to a steady stream of caffeine which can not only keep you awake, but may also improve short-term memory (which is useful if you're cramming for a test). So there's the student's perspective.
Now, here's some perspective from a person who works at Starbucks: we WANT people to come in and study (or have business meetings, or whatever). One of Starbucks philosophies is that to be successful as a business, you have to create an environment where your customers feel welcome, comfortable, and valued. We call this the "Third Place"- not just good products, not just good customer service, but a truly welcoming atmosphere that people enjoy being in. That's our mission, and when I see someone sit down and study in my coffee shop, I know I've achieved it.

Yes you have a point there. I mean it's not a sin to study in coffee shops, as long as you order any of their items there. And make sure that if you study there, to not scold anyone who makes noises because your studying is disturbed. My point in posting this discussion is to make people aware that in any public establishment, don't assume that you own the place. Whether they be coffee shops or fast food chains. If you prefer to study there, go ahead. But don't expect SILENCE. As I have said, these are public establishments.

Definitely you cannot bring coffee to the library, but if you study elsewhere, particularly in a coffee shop, and you know that there are a lot of people who hang out there too (who are not studying or just having fun with their friends), do not expect them to shut up when they see people studying. Because that's a public place and definitely not a library to observe silence.

I wouldn't study at Starbucks... there aren't very many tables or seats and it's always annoying when I go in for a few minutes and can't sit while I have my coffee because others are sprawled out studying. There are other coffee shops that I do study at, but they are notorious student hang outs. They are open and welcome students and intellectual conversations. There are tons of places to sit, read, talk, and study. I don't go to the library because it's too quiet, too cold, and you can't bring drinks in.

The Second Cup in Guelph Ontario, where I live, is the study hot-spot (I mean that literally since they offer internet access). I like going there to read and study. It's a nice change of scenery, and somehow makes study less boring. Also, if one needs to stay awake before a big exam, coffee is readily available. ;-) Some of those coffee shops are very intellectual places. When I see people studying at the coffee shop, I know it's an intellegent spot to hang out.

Thank you very much for that comment Ma'am. Your country offers that kind of service and I believe it's accepted to have these intellectual places as you've mentioned. I'm not sure though if that holds true with our coffee shops here. I'm not really against it but my friend just had an experienced with those people who visited Starbucks near our workplace (where we usually hang out). They were studying there and were like annoyed by the noise around. So here is where my concern comes in. Why should they be like that? Starbucks is a public place and you can't tell other people to keep quiet when you are studying :)

I think it's more relaxing to go to Starbucks than to the library. Also you can get coffee to help you stay awake, especially when studying for finals or midterms. It is a must, and Starbucks is the best remedy for that.

Studying in Starbucks can be expensive yet productive. Let's face it, people have different study habits. For one, coffee keeps us awake. If we study with a good cup of coffee chances are we feel relaxed and alert at the same time. Nothing bad with people who can afford to drink Starbucks coffee while studying. For those who can't afford sStarbucks but still want a conducive environment to study, there are a lot of other coffee shops that have provided us with lazy chairs and table to study with. The length of studying depends on what you are studying. If its only a test, you need not study until Starbucks closes. Don't push yourself to the point that your mind doesn't retain the information anymore. Four hours can be ample enough to cover a good deal of topics.

My school does have a library - but that library does not serve coffee! I feel that buying a $5 cup of coffee entitles me to stay in Starbucks for an hour or two studying - I think people that stay longer than that are sort of abusing the place and hogging the tables, but Starbucks is a nice place to study.
