Cleveland, Ohio public schools are deciding to make all-boy an dall-girl schools and require uniforms in the elementary grades. High school students will have a dress code. Their goal it is stated is to have the kids come to school without looking like they are ready for a rap video. They wish for the kids to be serious about education.
Uniforms would be free for those unable to pay. county commissioners offered to help subsidize the 1.5 million to 2 million dollars, the cost of the uniforms.
The city has slowly done this over the past few years with no 90 per cent of the elemtary school wearing required clothes like navy blue, khaki and white.
Enrollments in the schools have dropped by about 10,000 students in the last 10 years. This is in part due to the charter schools and vouchers that pay nonpublic schools for tuition.
So am looking to see what your opionions are!??

On one hand, I think it's great since I grew up poor and was ridiculed by classmates for having clothes that weren't in style. It's stupid, but that's what kids do! Somedays I'd just cry in the mornings while I got dressed because I knew the teasing was about to begin. It wasn't my fault that I only had second hand clothes from the 70's (I was a child in the 80's).
On the other hand, clothes can be a part of your individuality. It sometimes can be how you define yourself, if you look at me, you would think "earth mother granola eater" lol, it's an easy and quick judgement. Sometimes that can be great, sometimes that's not such a good thing!

Nicely said and I too understand dressing to express oneself. Being a Gemini I have double duty. Thanks much for responding to this discussion.

I also grew up with my Mother who was single with 4 of us kids and everything that i ever got i always made sure that i took good care of it. I grew up just as happy as any other child regardless and i look up to my mother for her strength and love that she has given me and i give to my own daughters now! God Bless!

I am going to have to say that I feel uniforms would be a good thing. I used to say that students needed to have a chance to show their individuality, but it has gotten out of hand. School administrators are too chicken to enforce written dress codes, so uniforms are needed. There is room within a uniform policy to express individuality..things like tennis shoes versus dress shoes, hair up or hair down, make up or no make up, dangling earrings or post earrings. Having a uniform policy would stop the bare bellies, jeans so low that half the guy's boxers are showing, jeans so low that the girl's g=string thong is showing and so on. Also it takes care of the haves/have nots...no one would be wearing hollister, abercrombie etc!

Good that it is enforced. Good way to learn to obey authority and to comply in the proper setting. Thanks for responding.

Well put. Seems like it would be a great thing for kids to adjust to. School could then be a good focus. Thanks for responding.

Our elementary school has a dress code and the principal HAS enforced it. My daughter has told me about certain students that have been either sent home or sent to the office to call home to get a change in clothing. No spaghetti straps, no mini skirts, no bellies showing, no hats or bandanas. I hate it when kids try to outdress one another.

On one hand I can see why they would be better than letting kids come to school dressed anyway they want to be dressed. On the other hand. They are only kids once, and when they become adults they will be told what they have to wear to work. So I think that let them express themselves while they are young and can.
But I don't have to worry about that personally I home school my children.

I think school uniforms are a great idea. Here are my reasons why:
1. They make everyone equal. Most students feel like they have to keep buying name brand clothes just to fit in. But with school uniforms, I think it takes the pressure off of buying expensive clothing.
2. When they have to wear a uniform, it would help them to get to school on time because they wouldn't be late in trying to find something to wear. You put it on and you go to school. But without a uniform, you try on a million outfits and when you find the right one, you're late to school.
3. Wearing uniforms also teaches students at an early age, that sometimes in life you have to wear uniforms as part of your job. And that life is not all about clothes. Most people are soo busy trying to look so fashionable and fit in with the latest trend, that they lose themselves in all of that. But wearing a uniform helps students to focus more on their studies, rather than their appearances. And it also helps them to see others with an open mind.

4. In life, colors matter. There will no longer be any gang-related hatred for one another. If you're all wearing one color, you don't have to worry about breaking another gangs color code. I think it unites all students. And that's extremely important in school. Now, you will not be appreciated for your clothes. But for your mind. And that's a powerful statement.

My children have gone to schools with and without uniforms. I have not seen any difference at all, I feel it takes away from my childrens right to be diverse and have a separate personality from the other children. I agree kids should not have certain clothing at school but, I think they should be able to wear clothing that suits their personality. My children currently attend a school that requires uniforms and they hate it.

I hear you well, the kids though will learn about compliance in the proper setting. What you don't fight becomes less hard to accept. Thanks very much for responding.

i think it is a good idea. with a school uniform, kids won't be going to school with ripped jeans and belly shirts. also, they won't have to figure out what they are going to wear that day. i also like that you wouldn't have to buy as many clothes for your kids, so in the long run it would save the parents money.

yes, uniform in school should be made mandatory because a school is a place where one learns discipline apart from the basic education. wearing a uniform is part of following a routine which instills a sense of discipline among children from a very early age and this helps them in their later life. also dressing up like rock stars does have a negative influence on the child's performance at school. i mean, early in the morning you are getting up and your first thoughts are what are you going to wear to school, how much make-up should you use, how to influence your bf/gf through your clothes and looks! where's the time to think of studies?

I think this is a great idea to make uniforms compulsory for all students. Now children from poor family or lower income family will not feel like they don't have good expensive dress or varitey of dresses like the children comes from rich family. That feelings surely hurt those children's heart.

School, uniforms are compulsory here. They have always been compulsory in Private schools, but Public Schools only brought the uniform policy in about 15 years ago. It varies as to cost, but there is no free voucher system. All schools would have a 2nd hand uniform shop.
I like them having a uniform. It helps to "equalise" students, and there is far less competition as to who is wearing the latest clothes, shoes, etc. Some uniforms look quite smart.
Uniforms also help identify problem students on public transport, if there is bad behaviour.

In California, they did that years ago, because of the outbreak of gang-color-related incidents. And, it is spreading from state to state. I believe that it is a good idea. They have started selling the school uniforms in stores like sears, mervyn's, etc...and so, you can get as many as you like for your kids. I do not have kids, but I would prefer it, if I did. I think that it is a good way to also have equality among the kids, because there are some that are already concerned with fashion and style, and they are only about 6!

OMG, I would LOVE school uniforms. It costs less, because I don't have to cave to evwery fashion trend for my kid for every day wear. And I don't have to be the bad guy by telling them that certain clothes are NOT fit for wearing to school ( like short skirts, midriff shirts, low cut, pants around their knees) and I don't have to worry about them taking skimpy clothes to school and changing into them when they get there! All hail the uniform!!

I went to a private school and it was a rumor they'd have uniforms before I graduated in 1998. No they didnt. They didnt have them yet when my sister graduated 3 years later in 2001. However, they have them now.
I think I'd just adapt to it. No buying school clothes. Thats nice. But still no chance to break out and wear what you want. It would suck but still.

Just based on my personal experience.....
I went to Akron 's ( Ohio ) Buchtel High School Back in the Late '80's and while
" the clothes do not make the man"...I got the crap beat out of me on a regular Basis. and it was entirely Based on ( you guessed it...) Status. If you wore " Floods " , because your family wasn't rich enough....you got the crap beat out of you! If you wore the same shirt twice in a week ( because your family couldn't afford it ) guess what??? you still got the Crap beat out of you !!! But....if you wore a brand new pair of Sneakers ( guess what ?? ) you still got the crap beat out of you , because the kids ( at that point ) wanted to take your shoes away!!! By the way....I am completely against Voucher- programs . This only promotes the divide between the classes! Besides....we should never Mix church & State. That is in the Constitution.

Sorry for your experiences. They were in no way reasonable.
I appreciate your responding to my discussion. Also on a side note you brought up....By now, most conservatives are aware that the words "separation of church and state" appear no where in the U.S. Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, or the Federalist Papers. They are not the law; neither are they part of the legislative history of the law. The doctrine or separation of church and state is a fabrication of blatantly liberal, anti-Christian, dishonest, activist judges. In fact, the words,"separation of church and state" are only words taken out of context from a letter written by Thomas Jefferson. They exist nowhere in the laws of our nation. Says Bill Sizemore from a 2003 interview.
Just thought that you and many others should know!

I agree with it in principle. I have seem so many problems in my school from kids because they wear or don't wear the most fashionable brand, because they do and others don't, or because they don't and others do. Uniforms can help in that somehow, and kids can still show of their uniqueness using uniforms. Kids in schools that already have uniforms tend to personalize them in many different ways so it's never just an uniform:)
Now on the other hand, uniforms are expensive and that is something i do have a problem with. NOt everyone can afford the prices they tend to make for those uniforms ( not counting on the fact that they need at least 2 counting with washing or emergencies).

Tis true and I thought that the board was going to help those that could not afford them. Wonder if that will work. Someone else said that Sears or some store was selling them now. Buying 1 a month could get tem a nice supply. Starting before school of course. Thanks much for responding.

I have to say that uniforms would be a great idea. How many kids feel slighted because their parents can't afford the latest name brand fashions and are picked on by their peers for not dressing to the 9's. For this reason I think it would be a great idea.

In our state many schools have mandatory uniforms. While my kids are grown, it sure would have made it much easier on me and on them if they could have worn uniforms. Too much peer pressure. Now I have a stepchild, she has been in the office too many times b/c of wearing inappropriate clothing to school. The youngsters today do not have a lot to choose from, in all the stores you go to, the jeans are way down around the hips or lower, the shirts are too high in the waist or show too much cleavage. So yes, I would be in favor of uniforms. My little neice wears them, and no complaints there either.

i'm actually all for uniforms in schools. i think it's a good idea and i always wanted one when i was in school. i think kids would make fun of other kids less. there wouldn't be compatition of who has the best label or who can wear the hottest skankiest clothes.

I live in ontario canada and there are a number of schools here that have uniforms and I love the idea. It saves money and is easier on the children especially the older ones. This way children and teens are not judged on the lable of their clothing, which we all know has to be the best now a days and they can let their personality shine through. Plus mornings are a lot easier too an dyou dont have to worry about fighting with your child about inappropriate outfits... lol
