What type of dog is best for family?

I cannot name just one breed of dog but I think what ever breed dog you get that if you get it as a puppy and train it the way you want it to be then it will grow to be the pet you want around. A guard dog? A family friendly pet that is good around kids etc. I had 2 dobermans from birth and they were plain family dogs. But don't mess with the family if ya get my drift.
