I am on a low budget, and Miss 10 hasn’t had a school friend’s birthday party for years. I normally take a cake to the class room each year. I would really like to give her a party this year. If we have a party, it will be in our back yard, which is a decent size, and weather permitting suitable, if it rains it can be moved into the garage. I have approx 5 weeks to prepare, so hopefully I can budget & plan ahead for this.
I am after some ideas for the party bags, it will be a boy girl party. I work in china town in my city, and have access to all the “cheap $2 stores” I was thinking of getting girls a fan but boys are difficult for me to buy for.
Also this age what games do children like, miss 10 wants a piñata. Other than that I am fresh out of ideas.. .
All suggestions & Ideas considered

Try some old fashion games that are fun for boys and girls and no cost. These can be done inside or outside, depending on the weather.
1: Musical chairs. Play the music, as children walk around the chairs, on chair less than the amount of kids walking around them, and then shut off the music, and each child must sit. The child that is still standing, leaves. Then repeat with one less chair, until only one child is left, they win a prise.
2: A scavenger hunt is fun. Just write a list of items that all the children must find. Say about 20 things. Hide them all over and under and on top and behind things. The first person that finds all of them, wins. (simple things to hide. ex: comb, cloths pin, a coin, pen, pad, book with title, and so forth)
3: Hide some quarters around the house and let them find them and keep them.
4: Pin the tail on a donkey.
As far as gift ideas. Look at the gum ball machines, and perhaps you can buy some of those toys for the boys or girls.
Good luck, have fun, and let us know what you do?

I posted a great idea for a birthday cake. It's cake in ice cream cones, and you decorate them like ice cream. Did you see it? It's a smash with the kids, and so easy to prepare.

Cake is interesting, I’m afraid I have no imagination. The cake is hubbies department; I better let him pretend to be part of the organising lol

Thanks for the ideas, I was getting worried some of the games may be a little “young” for our soon to be Miss 11 & her friends. I like the scavenger hunt idea, pass the parcel & the piñata most kids seem to amuse themselves & don’t always want constructed party games. My next thoughts will be food ideas, there are kids with gluten free needs, and hyper needs, hopefully those parents will hang around. :D

my advice would simply to be CREATIVE ! =) look for things around the house to inspire you... for example ...
1) i had a party at my house where all my little cousins came over and i found water bombs in my drawer (you can easily find these at a $2 shop) and i cut up little pieces of paper and wrote LOSER on all of them except for one, on which i wrote WINNER. i put all the little papers in the water bombs and blew them up. i told my cousins that they had to pop all the water bombs and find the WINNING one to get a secret SURPRISE.. they LOVED it ! you can have anything for the surprise... $10, chocolates, a little toy...
2) classical games like PASS THE PARCLE & PIN THE TAIL ON THE DONKEY are always fun.. im 17 and my friend who is the same age had it at her last party lol...
3) a "fishing" game would be fun and easy to make.. all you need is two items that feel really similar (rice and tiny safety pins - make sure the safety pins are CLOSED !) you need a lot of them... then u fill a bucket with these two items however u should put less of the one you want them to find (i.e. safety pins). blindfold the child and tell them they have 20 seconds to find as many safety pins as possible but they can only use they hands to sift through and they cannot look down. the children take turns and the one who finds the most safety pins wins ! (you should have a sheet with the contestants names and record how many they find) you can tell the other children they are allowed to distract the child looking for the safety pins so that its exciting for everyone.. they can shout things like WOAH u found it ! to confuse them hehehe...
i hope that helped ! dont forget to tell us if the party was a success.. which im sure it wil be ! :) have a good one.

Thankyou for the suggestions, I’m intrigued by the balloon game, may not use the word looser, (we have to be politically correct now days... LOL) But has possibilities, Maybe break a balloon with a note inside to begin or finish a scavenger hunt…???
10 going onto 11 they seem so much older now than when I was that age, so was worried that some of the games would be too “Childish”. But then if a 17 year old is still playing some of the games, they must be timeless… lol. Miss 10 suggested musical statues, similar to musical chairs, They do some dancing to the music but must go to very still when music stops.
Party if it goes ahead will be the weekend of the 24th March.
Next will be working on the food, & decorations…

I agree that a pinnata is a great idea. My 9 year old is always asking for one at his next birthday. You can get them at Kmart now. Also the old pass the parcel is a favourite with any age. I took my daughter when she turned 11 to the movies with three of her friends. Then we went to McCafe for moccacinos. It was very grown up for them. Having said that, the girls all played in the playground after they had finished.... Have fun keep it simple and they'll make their own fun I'm sure.

One of the things that we did was have a painting contest. The thing is..they had to paint with their toes! We would use poster board and finger paints. I would put a dab of different colored paint on the poster boards and the kids would have to paint with their toes. They could not put their names on their board and one of the other adults at the party would be the judge with a small prize to the winner.
Bobbing for apples is still fun for this age. We also had pie eating contests using aluminum pie pans filled with whipped topping, but they could not use their hands to hold the pie pans. You could do face painting using stencils or freehand if you are able (which I definitely am not). I would warn the parents to not dress them in anything they don't want to get messy. : )
How about cards for the boys gift bags? I'm not sure what is popular right now. When my son was that age it was Pokemon. : ) Just a few ideas that I hope will help you out.

Thanks for the idea's, My daughter is really into pokemon, I think that is why she is friends with the boys. May have to get her to help look for cards for the bags.
