Hockey vs Basketball Why basketball is bigger?

Why is basketball bigger then hockey in the states. The other day I heard a conspiracy theory. Back in the day when stern left hockey to become commissioner of B-ball he saw that hockey was bigger then bball and was going to be way bigger b/c it was growing rapidly. So in his parting he got to recommend someone who would succeed him as the NHL commissioner. Whathe did was pick the worst person to do the job. he recommnd bettman b/c he knew that he could not do the job and he would mess up and ruin the NHl. which is excatly what he did. Does anyone agree with me or have anyting to add about this theory. many thanks.
