I have been stuck for some time with simultaneous equations. I can do simple ones but as soon as I do harder ones I get stuck. I know how to start them off but it's just getting down to the actual x and y.

Hi,
There sre some techniques that can be used for solving quadratic equations. For example: factoring, using the quadratic formula etc.
For simulatneous equations there are techniques like substitution and addition method.
You could check them out at onlinemathlearning.com/algebra-help.html

Here is a quick lesson in simultaneous equations:-
Equ 1 :2x + 3y + 8 = 34
Equ 2 :4x - 2y + 9 = 13
Call each equation a number & make the coefficient of one variable, eg 'x' the same.
So Equ 1 multiply by 2 becomes 4x + 6y + 16 = 68 : Equ 3
combine terms ('get rid of x')
Eq 3 minus Eq 2 6y -(-2y) + 7 = 55
8y = 48
y = 6
Substitute y = 6 in Equ 1 2x + (3 times 6) + 8 = 34
Arrange terms 2x = 34 - 26
x = 4
You will probably appreciate the space and format of MYLOT Answer Portals are not the best medium for teaching principes - But if you follow the steps I have laid out you should be able to do simple equations - GOOD LUCK :)
