Cold Weather affects our pets too!

Just as we care for ourselves differently at different times of the year, we should also be sensitive to our pets' needs during warm and cold weather conditions.
Most pets spend a lot of time indoors and won't be able to tolerate extremely cold weather, and pets that normally spend more time outside will need more food for enough energy to cope, from a high-quality, nutritionally complete food.
After going out in very cold weather, remove any packed snow or ice from your pet's paws and wipe thoroughly to remove the trapped moisture that causes sores.
Also, be careful to keep antifreeze well out of harm's way. Antifreeze is highly toxic to dogs and cats, but they are attracted to its sweet taste and will lap up any that's not properly disposed of.
Look after your pets in the cold, because they love you!

I am so happy that you posted this. It always amazes me that humans do not know these things, or care enough to find out more info on how to take care of their pets.

It doesn't take much effort to make our pets more comfortable really, my dog and cat both have their feet dried when they come in, they still leave pawprints but it must be nicer than waiting for your fur to dry.
Even my dads rabbit gets dried, he has indoor and outdoor hutches, a run and the patio and garden to play in when they are with him.
I like to put on simple little things that make us think about how we live with our pets.
It is amazing how people think our pets can fend for themselves or it doesn't matter.

Thank you for the tips. I never thought to dry our dogs feet after going outside. And she is so old she has arthritus. So we also keep a pillow for her to lay on and a blnket I like to warm for her when her legs are bothering her. It really helps.

Bless her, my dog is old too and sometimes her back legs are stiff, she has her own chair in the lounge, her bed in our room and often sleeps on my bed. As she is a doberman with little bony legs I always wipe her feet when she comes in. Youur house is a little buzy to remember paws all the time but when it's cold we have to think a little bit forour baby pets.
I lk,e how you warm her blanket, you are as soft as me, when Newty gets her bath I warm the towels in the tumbler, lol.

That is not a problem at all here in Australia. Our poor dog is not 19 years old and doesn't seem to handle anything too well at all. She has arthritis and is gets worse with each passing year but she sleeps on the swag our son used to own before he went overseas the first time. No sooner had he gone than his dog nudged it around till the strap came undone, and that was her bed. Probably because it smelt of him but we left her on it and told him he could reclaim it if he wanted. He chose not to. LOL
At present she has this terrible rasping noise, so not sure what is wrong with her, so she is going to the Vet tomorrow. Worse thing is that my husband is in denial about their being a problem, son says it is my decision as to what happens. If the vet says she is suffering and nothing can be done, then it won't be long before I have her put to sleep. I will not allow her to suffer and she has been a very loyal dog for many years now.
As I said she is our son's dog actually and he was the one who trained her, looked after her etc. But she has spent a lot of time with us, particularly since he has been travelling for many years. The interesting thing is that she still knows who her master is. When he is away, she has no problems dealing with us, but once our son returns we are totally ignored by her. LOL

Morning Rianbow at the moment we have an old dog zara she is fourteen years old and last summer she really felt the heat , One of the kids clipped her hair off with a pair of scissors what a mess .Well this year she was off to the vets for a propper job ,well you have never seen a more pittiful dog in your life and she shivered for weeks we had to put a jacket on her every night for over a month even in the heat we were having here .Now she has adjusted and her long hair has started to grow back just hoping that as winter approaches the shorter more thicker hair will get a move on .Next summer i think we will still have her clipped but not as short as this year .She was undoubtably a lot cooler

My dogs are indor pets, and they are out only 3 times a day during the winter. During the summer they are out for as long as possible but always with my supervision.
Winter is not favorite for them. They eat more and sleep more. I use special ice salt outside, good for pet paws.

I love reading your posts because you always have some good and useful tips or advice. My cats are indoors so I'm not too concerned about them in the colder temps. Our dogs though are wee so they have booties, and jackets. I also limit their walks in extremely cold weather. Cheers!

My little Fellow does not like the Cold, but he still insists on going out. I think next year we will buy him a coat lol. Well he has his blanket and Cushion in his Bed and if he gets cold in the night, he will get under that or he will come up to me nodge me with his cold wet Nose for me to lift the Cover so he can get underneath.

We have had a time of our weather as of late and we did take extra water out and an old blanket to pack around my black lab's house and added straw. He appreciated it much. Our Austrlain shepherd has dug all the straw out of his house and insists on barking into the wind blown snow. He curls up and sleeps right on the snow. He like this weather since he was 3 coats. He sure will shed later this spring. The birds use it for their nests. So our animals were tended and thankfully I was able to instruct the others about Pepper being too light for the winter weather. We upped his food and he got all the treats for awhile til he bulked up.
Our critters are amazing and we do all we can to keep them healthy and happy. My wish is for everyone to do the same.

These are such great tips that we pet lovers need to remember! I know that I don't own any pets right now, but I sure would never want any that I did own to suffer from the cold. So thank you for giving us all these great reminders! I really appreciate it! ^_^
