Characters we love to hate

In many tv shows there is usually at least one character that we love having in the show even though we don't like them. They are usually the villian, the bad guy or the b*tch. Even though we can't stand what they do or wish they'd get caught for some reason we wouldn't want them to leave the show. They help make the show as good as it is. Now that character might change in time to one we just love and then they usually get another character in that is the same way.
One of these characters for me is Lex Luthor on Smallville. Can't picture the show without him. Love how he thinks and how he does what he wants but at the same time hate that he does it. I want him to get caught, to lose Lana, etc. Another was Spike on Buffy the Vampire Slayer when he first came on there. He was the bad guy who wanted to kill Buffy and Angel. Wanted to cause havoc. Didn't stop me from liking the character and I was glad to see him turned into a good guy.
So on the shows you watch do you have a character that you love to hate?

My favorite in the world to look at bad guy is someone whose name I have no idea what it is.
He is someone I just call "tattoo man". He is very unique and is in a ton of movies and tv shows that call for a very bad character. He is bald and every inch of his body that shows, up to his neck is covered with tattos. If he is wearing a shirt with a high collar and long sleeves you do not see them. He was in Con Air and was a regular character on Nip/Tuck for a couple of seasons. I think he was finally gotten rid of this past season.
And, I am with you on Spike.....he was a cutie pie ~Donna

Oh I know exactly who you mean. He played Escobar on Nip/Tuck and yes he was taken care of in the last season. The actor's name is Robert LaSardo and he has been in many things. He's a great actor and yeah he plays characters we hate but he does it so well that you want to see more of him.

I've spotted him on a few shows including General Hospital as well. He seems to be quite popular at playing the bad guy. Of course he looks the part which helps.

I love this actor!! He's been on Nip/Tuck, and played a villain on General Hospital (not that I admit to watching it, mind you) for a while. He creeps the crap outta me! Love him.

If you'll forgive me for using a book instead of a television show, I have to admit I have a bit of a crush on Bellatrix Lestrange. I mean I know she's totally despicable and wicked, but I find her intriguing and enchanting at the same time. That scene in Goblet of Fire when Harry's in pensieve and sees her sitting in the interrogation chair like it's a throne, and her supreme confidence make her attractive in a twisted sort of way.
Have I admitted I'm a total Harry Potter nerd?
I have a crush on Tonks too...
I also always admired Hannibal Lectur--the intellect, the charm. There was always that cannibalism thing, though..

Oh I can understand that one with her very easily. I mean she was so worried about Draco in the last book but before that she really came off so aloof and untouchable. It's a weird combination that works. Makes you want to feel for her yet at the same time reach out and smack her one.
Hannibal is a good example of one. Oh yeah. He was one that gave you shivers but you admired him at the same time, at least I did. Very intersting character.

Oh Lestat was great. He could be such a total jerk and yet you still liked him. You knew you shouldn't but you couldn't help it. He just pulled you right in to his web.

House is the show for me ...he is such a jerk to the patients and his staff ..but now this cop is after him I feel sorry for him ..he has no feelings for his patients but yet he goes to all lenghts to find a cure for them ...its quite the show actually ...I guess I like to watch just because of his personallity and how he can find cures in his own crazy mixed up ways ...

I've never watched House so will have to take your word for it. I can see though why you'd love to hate him. When they do things like that it's easy to want to like him even if you would like at the same time to give him a good kick in the rear.

Ah, Spike. I'll always have a place in my heart for Spike. I started out loving to hate him, and then I went back and forth on him for a long time. Almost to the end actually. Of course at the last episode I couldn't hate him, and of course cried my eyes out. =P
Let's see... characters I love to hate... how about Amanda on Highlander? She was so psycho, and a total user, but man was she funny. My husband just hated her outright, but she just amused me way too much. (Of course, she's not technically a villian, but she's a heck of a b*tch most of the time).

Hehe Amanda was a trip. Yeah you loved to hate her. She could be the Queen B at times that's for sure. There were other times later on where she wasn't but she was one that got to you. I loved it when she got her own show there for awhile.

I agree. Amanda was awesome. I didn't really see her as being bad though. She seemed like a strong female type, and a sneaky thief. I liked her.

What a great question! I used to love to hate Addison on Grey's Anatomy, but now I just love her. And although I don't wtach the soaps anymore, Erica Kane from All My children is another one-- she's such a b**** at times, but she's fascinating!

Ever notice on soaps they always have one that is a total B*****. They can't seem to not have one. I loved ones over the years on General Hospital. You hated them but they were great and really add to the story.

What a great discussion. Buffy has a lot of great villians (Glory, the Master, and even dark Willow). I think my favorite was "The Mayor". He was just so psycho and bizzare, all father-knows-best one minute, total psyhopath the next. I loved hating him!
Right now I am watching seson 3 of Nip/Tuck on DVD and I am also loving to hate The Carver. He/She (I don't know who it is yet) is just sooo creepy!
I always thought The Joker (Batman) was a great villan too. I think he's best in the comics as opposted to TV of movies, though I do have high hopes for the net Batman movie.
Oh and on Deadwood, I love Al Swearengen. You really hate him in the begining, but after a while you start to see a side of him that makes him seems a little more human, even though he can be so evil!

Well I won't tell you who the Carver is but you will be surprised. I'll tell you that much. The ending was strange. Of course so was the Carver.
Catwoman from Batman, one you knew was a bad guy but she was so good at it. You rooted for her at times. Just that type of character.

The Carver! That's a really good one. He/She is just so twisted and evil. Just when you think The Carver couldn't do anything worse, he/she will find a new horrifying way to surprise you.

Hi! My favorite is a character I love to hate and I love to love - J.R. Ewing on Dallas! He's my absolute favorite! Dallas wouldn't have been the same if the storylines hadn't changed to be more about J.R. I think he's one of the best characters in TV history! :-)

Yes he is a good one :) It's been a while since I watched Dallas but you are so right. He really made that show. He did a lot of things we hated but he was sooo good at it.

She is the type that give son-in-laws or daughter-in-laws nightmares. She was great but oh I wouldn't want to have her as my mother-in-law either.

The all-time character on my hate list is Alexis Carrington - Joan Collins' role in Dynasty. You know you hate her but the show would not have been as popular without her. And then there's Heather Locklear as Amanda Woodward in Melrose Place.

Joan Collins really made that character. Talk about a total B*tch but at the same time you couldn't take your eyes off her. She was evil but you didn't care you still wanted her to get away with it all.

I Hate the Bad Characters for Being so Bad That no one Can Harm Until the End.
And i Also Hate the Good Character for Being so Good That, They Didn,t Kill The Bad Guy When He Always Had the Power to do it.

Yes-Lex Luther is the guy I really like even though he's a villian the guy you love to hate, have sympanthy with, support, and hopes changes, just because he seems to have a heart and do good once in awhile. He's taken over by his obsessions, and the thought of power, we know his father is responsible. But know his father has changed-he's know the bad guy you like to like. It seems the only characters you dislike are the temporary evil people in smallville during episodes.

Yeah he's not your typical villian since you see all the sides of him. You know he does have a good side even if it's buried way down deep.

Archie Bunker was unique that's for sure. He was very loveable in an odd way even though we hated some of his attitudes. He really opened the eyes up for a lot of people about being racist.

Some of the annoying or bad guy characters make the show. I remember once that someone told me they wouldn't watch an episode of a show because one of sometimes drop in characters was going to be on. I thought about it and realized that if that actor wasn's so good at making me dislike them then the show wouldn't be as good, and also it shows how good the actor is.
On older shows I remember as a kid one of the nastiest characters on tv, was so popular that he was the show.
every where there were t-shirts JR For president, and Who Shot JR?
On Smallville Michael Rosenbaum as Lex Luther, it is interesting that you want him to be a better person because you like him even when you can't stand him.

JR was a classic choice for those we love to hate. Same with Alexis Carrington, I think that was the character name. She was very good in the role of nasty woman.

Well in India we have the so called "Saans Bahu serials". Which means they depict relationship between Mother in law and wife. The mother in law is always the one who is the "bad" character. So i hater her, like all Indians. :)

I agree with Tony Soprano. Everything about him you know you should hate but at the same time you watch him to succeed. You like him and how he is. We are a weird society.

My favorite bad girl which I watch everyday was the girl who is the bad girl and at the same time she is the lead actress she potrays being so bad but the title of that soap is her name. She really acts very good and you really want to know what is her next move for she is really bad and when she become good to some people there you will see at the end that she was just being good was because she just want to get something. Sometimes you will thought that she already change but at the end she was not.

i have several characters i love to hate...
on 24 it's been changing because the cast is everchanging !
it went from nina (season 1) - who was the mole in CTU to...
sayed ali (season 2) - who was the terrorist to...
gael ortega & steven saunders (season 3) - gael turned out to be good and saunders was a terrorist who realised a deadly virus to...
michelle dessler & habib marwan (season 4) - michelle seemed like a b*tch when she first came on the show because she broke tony's heart but then she and tony became my fave characters and marwan was yet another terroritst to...
the PRESIDENT !! (season 5) - who turned out to be EVIL !!
and now in ssn 6... of course it would be fayed... the terrorist !
in other shows like prison break it would be the president, agent kellerman, and that 'kim' guy
in desperate housewives its edie cos she's the b*tch but like u said.. i cant imagine the show without her...
thanks for the great discussion !
i hope i answered ur question ! =) if so pls rate + ! thanks !

You named the two I loved to hate! I do admire Lex on one hand cause he's so intelligent and when he gets knocked down,he picks himself right back up and starts over but he has really started to show his true colors and I feel guilty for liking him but I do..As for Spike I always loved his sense of humor, black though it was,and I kind of felt sorry when he turned good and no one believed him

Yeah I know what you mean with Spike. He does have a wicked sense of humor. I liked him as both the bady guy and the good guy. He was great to watch. With Lex we are seeing more and more of his hidden agendas and yeah we like him but we don't want to. He does make the show more interesting though.

I can't agree with you about Spike on Buffy. I didn't love to hate him. I would love to boff him. lol. His character was supposed to be this bit part, and ended up being a regular character because everyone loved him. Yum.
A character I love to hate is House. He's SUCH a jackass, but you can't help but like him anyway.

Hehe oh yeah, got to love those bad boys :) Spike especially when he first started on the show could be a real jerk, a sexy jerk but a jerk. I liked that he became a good guy.
