The World's 10 Worst Dictators

United States

Today I responded to a friends topic about EU and it reminded me of an article I read about the 10 Worst Dictators in the world. It was a while back, but I did a search and found the latest article in Parade. It certainly made me appreciate being an American. Is our country really safe from these people? http://www.parade.com/articles/editions/2005/edition_02-13-2005/featured_0

Worst dictators - Europe has certainly had it's share. Thank goodness for the EU ensuring peace on our continent. I used to think that Europe had the bloddiest, most vicious history on earth (though you wouldn't know it to see us now!), but I think the Far East has seen it's share of extreme brutality too, eg Pol-Pot in Cambodia, and of course the Japanese occupation of south-east asia during WW2, which by all accounts was worse than the Nazi occupation of Europe.

It's a shame people can't get along.

I think that left to their own devices, people do get along, it's just that often people arn't left alone, but are manipulated by the media to hate each other. In order to go to war and kill someone you have to be distant from them and not see them as people at all. As soon as you engage with each other as humans, it becomes very difficult to kill. Europe is aiming for the 21st century to be our first century ever where there is no war on our continent. I think we have a good chance of achieving it as we are getting closer to each other. The EU allows freedom of movement, so we are all allowed to live and work in each other's countries. As a result, there are about 200,000 Brits in Spain and about 200,000 Brits in France, and about 400,000 Polish in Britain and about 100,000 French in Britain. All these people have learnt a lot more about other cultures than their parents generation just 30 years ago. When people start making friends across borders, and start seeing people as simply people instead of "other", then it's hard to hate. The biggest threat is the media - the Murdoch press in particular pumps out poison (Murdoch wants to break up the EU). It's a fight between ordinary people making connections across the continent and the Murdoch media trying to break these connections. I hope the ordinary people win.

I think I am going to make a trip to the library this week and see what I can find out about this. I read some interesting books over the summer about Hungary, Poland and Austria. My ancestors are from these countries. I think I'll just grab a book on WOrld History and see what they have about EU. I prefer curling up with a good history book vs, surfing the internet.

I read the same article. In fact, I saved it. I still cannot comprehend how Castro has stayed in power so long. He has done so much damage to so many people. And China! Their dictator persecutes religions mightily, yet we are having the 2008 Olympics in that country!

I don't understand it either. It seems like some people just have the knack or being so evil and vindictive people are too afraid to oust them from power. It's really quite sad how horrible these people are.

I think this list is not fair, I would add a few dictators on it...
