My father who's age is 53 is pretty much active then me,he got up very early in the morning,go for a walk, and manage the time for each and every work,he is as much efficient in his work as any other young one,he is going to retire after 5 years from now and from right this age he start planning about, what he do after his retirement?most of the people thinks that there is no life left after retirement or the age which is left after the retirement is just for the rest and taking care of the family as a watchman of a big showroom, why people thinks that old age is just like the sunset of life?????????wht's ur opinion about that????

Well I think it depends on the person. It's true that some people (especially men perhaps), may feel useless that they are no longer working, and providing for their family, but many others see it as the beginning of a new phase of their lives. If they have saved a little money, they can start to eravel, and to do the things they never had the time to do when they were working full time. I know many older people who have taken up new hobbies, and of course they get to spend more quality time with their grandchildren. I have two very "sprightly" pensoners living near me - both widows in their 70's. Ann goes to the gym twice a week, has just bought a computer, and is learning to surf the Net, and has just returned from a safari holiday in South Africa. And Nancy walks 3 miles every day with her dog, goes to regular theatre trips, and shows in the West End, and babysits her active, 6-year-old great-grand-daughter every day after school. They are both amazing ladies - no sunset yet for them!!!

yaa that the spirit,i was just talking about the spirit, people lost the spirit of living in their old age and feels that they are now useless, but if they keep their spirit of living then there is no reason of feeling that u r an old person.

Old! Old! Old! There is a lot to do. Helping others is great thing to do. I recently started working to help people that are faced with poverty. It cost me nothing but time. I have gotten ministers to set up a food pantry and use it as an out reach to those less fortunate. I also do part time work on my own. I sort of have to pick and chose but, it keeps me busy. I wish him all the best. Retirement isn't the end it's the beginning. If he uses a computer have him go to Eons.com it is for over 50 folks.

My husband is 5 years older than your father and I don't consider that to be old. He is also very fit and still travels all over the country with his job. I am older than my husband and I also consider myself to be very fit. When my husband retires at age 70 I am going to start teaching music again as I will have more time to do it. I used to teach, but I decided to take a couple of years off so that I could learn to play more instruments. As long as I have the use of my limbs I will stay active and will always work at soemthing.

it is correctly called the Golden Years...IF...you plan right and have enough money and of course your health. You can do everything you want, when you want, with whom you want, where you want. Get up and go to bed whenever you feel like it. No more bosses. It's a great life! Your father sounds like the active type who will really enjoy it. If he also remembers age is only a number, you are as old as you feel.

Your father is not old at the age of 53, and most of the people at this age do get up early in the mornings, as this is the best time of the day, and they normally do go for a walk to start their day off right, with a bit of exercise. No this is when life starts for most people as they have already completed their working life, and want to either travel or do something special with the rest of their life, and they have the money to do this with.

Well!many people see oldage as the most interesting part of their life. There is a person ,who after 50 ,started reading physics and attained a noble prize. It is the way you see life!If you see it as a time to pursue your own interests that stage of life will really be interesting!

First the ideas of retirement came somewhere when our government instituted Social Security. Before that it was not something anyone thought of doing. Retirement is sort of now forced on some people who do not want to do it. I think no one really retires unless they are ready to vegitate and die soon. My husband is 58 and he is not even thinking of retiring and he said if he does he is not retiring he is retreading so he can go some more. Homemakers never retire until they die and I am a homemaker.

Well, 53 isn't really old age, middle age maybe. I think activity and productivity depend on general health and emotional well being, not age. I know people under 60 that are hypochondriacs and behave like they are on their last legs. Then I know women in their 80s who look like they are in their 60s and act like they are in theor 40s, drive, are up and about and are far more energetic and mentally competent than far younger people. It sounds like your dad is one of those people who will live a long, long time!

Hey you stole my story there:). I bet its ditto the same with my father. He wakes up at 4 am for the past few years, even on sundays. He practices yoga and pranayama every day. Also other aspects of his life are so diciplined. While I have a hard time getting ma a** out of the bed evrymorning. I feel so ashamed, but too lazy to take any action. May be I ll be like him when I am 50:D. He has been very diciplined throught his life due to military training, but now it he seems more diciplined than ever. I am even planing to take military training for that:D. Oldage is the sunset of the life. But most people treat it like sunrise. As the famous saying goes:- Life is a game, But by the time we learn how to play it we are too old to play. All the best buddy:).

I think that it's a time for everything. It's important for you to feel that you can do the things that you were doing when you were younger.Poets tend to refer as "sunset" when they are trying to express someones age. It's important to realize that our life ends on some point and that we have to live the days we have to the fullest!

Pointing out your father's practices to testify old age fitness doesn't seem appropriate. Because he is not that aged. He is not even retired from his regular job. I know an advocate who is 85+ and still drives his vintage car to the court and listen to the proceedings there. I don't think he is getting any cases, but still he doesn't put an end to that practice of visiting the court everyday. This keeps the man engaged and gives him a sence of significance. If health and mobolity is ok and resouces are sufficient, I think old age is enjoyable.

Yes old age cannot be regarded as a sun set. There will be a lot to do in future in old age only because that is the time we get some time to think about things around us.

Well, I turned 55 this year. We have 2 huskies that require a lot of exercise. I do not walk them together. So, in saying that, each dog gets 6 miles a day by me alone. That gets me walking anywhere from 10 to 14 miles a day. Sometimes it depends on the weather or how busy my day is. I became more active as I got older. 50 is no longer old, we do not have one foot in the grave by then. I became a poet after the age of 50. The governments would love for us to work till 70 and hope we are so dried up that we won't need medicare. We are living longer and most of us are healthy. An active mind and an active body will see us through our 80's....... I can't wait for my hubby to retire. But he has a ways to go yet. When he does, we plan on doing a lot of hiking and seeing the country. Life is what you make it. If you think retirement will be boring, then it probably will be. It won't be for us as we are looking forward to it. That will be the time to travel.

That really exhibits the vigor and zeal our predecessing generation had and which we have lost. The predecessing generation was systematic and was not so luxury oriented. Whereas all of us, would rather prefer a bike to go to a near bye store, instead of walking down. Regarding the retiriment stuff, i would say itz all your perception. Retiriment is just a phase of life, where you are given another option to think about your life. It would be called the second innings of life. It does not mean you sit idle and while away the rest of the days of your life. Remaining active should be the prime motive during this age and not just making money at the cost of your health.
