Photo CD's or DVD's

Do you think giving photo cd's or dvd's to family or friends who live so far away are a good idea? I send a soldier in Iraq (good friend)dvd's of random photos wioth music added. Showing how the town has changed or of new stores just of every day things that I know he misses and he says they make his day. Some argue that it is just pictures and music and that I go overboard. I use severla diffenrt progams to burn the photos on dvd and to add music to the dvd what do you use if any to make dvds? do u think theya re good gifts or impractical?
