I know it may sound gross, but the best thing to do is to shower every other day and just use a washcloth on the in between days. The hot water just makes skin drier. Avino has oatmeal for baths that is soothing also. Maybe one oatmeal bath a week would help. Also try a thicker moisturizer. If your hand and feet itch a lot, you can smooth Vaseline on them at night and put on socks and thin gloves while you sleep. That helps me a lot. Hope I helped.

Every year from about November to March I also have this problem. Nowadays it's not as bad since I'm living in CA and the weather just isn't that severe. When I was living in Reno/Tahoe however, it was so bad I finally went to a dermatolgist.
The only thing I remember her recommending for me to do was this:
After you finish showering,(while you are still completely wet and still standing in the shower) take a SMALL amount of Vaseline and rub it between your hands, then rub it into your wet skin. You can use it all over your body, or focus on the problem areas. Next, grab your towel and pat yourself dry. You will notice a difference right away.
The MOST important step here is using only a SMALL amount of Vaseline, while your skin is still wet.If you use too much, or if you dry off first you will not get a desired result.
I hope this helps!

Richer emollients containing oils such as Omega 3 and 6 will provide more prolonged protection - an emolliating layer of a rich moisturizer will help prevent evaporation of water from skin cells (known as transepidermal water loss) by its protective coating. The under-eye area is particularly vulnerable and sensitive to dryness. This will accentuate the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Faithful emolliation will diminish this.

Hi Linda, sorry you are having this problem. First, the dry air in the house isn't helping. You may need to get a humdifier for moisture. As far as itching, you can get over the counter cortizone, and that helps itching and dry skin. All the creams and lotions don't really help if the condition is as bad as yours.

Hi linda! It is really freezing out there in your country right now and us here at the other side of the world is starting our summer for few weeks.
We never experienced winter in our country so I'm not the best person to give advice that is why I researched some good sites and find a sensible tips under this link:

The best treatment for severely chapped skin is to slather your skin in Vaseline or lotion and wrap these areas in cotton or wear cotton gloves while you sleep. Another option is to wrap your hands in plastic wrap or in a plastic bag while you sleep. However, cotton gloves will allow your skin to breathe better. Always keep these areas covered and well lotioned during the winter months when the air is the driest. Carry lotion with you so that the skin is never allowed to dry out. Avoid using harsh soaps or cleansers as these can also dry out your skin. It is best to use mild, moisturizing cleansers in warm, but not hot, water and to avoid taking long showers or baths during the winter. Apply lotion directly after getting out of the shower and don't towel yourself off completely as any moisturizer works best if there is a little moisture on your skin already.
Hope this be of help. Take care!

My physiotherapist's hands are so dry I can't see the pink skin for the white. I don't know why he doesn't do something about it. His problem is, though, he has to wash his hands after every patient.
I find Aveeno lotion to be very helpful. I used it for my daughter's exzema several years ago and it never returned. Though I use special foot lotion for my burning, itchy feet, I use Aveeno for everything else. My kids will come to me complaining about something and I just say, "Aveeno" and they roll their eyes and go get the Aveeno. It works.
