Can you guide me from where to start making a portrait. Do you start with filling backgroud first. And what coating should be put over the dry completed painting?

in my case i first did the underpainting...my method is lean over fat, which means i used thinned paint(color paints + refined turpentine) first, from there i have a good control of what i'll be going into,i apply my first flesh tone the lightest...light to dark...bcoz if the color used where light you can easily correct it rather than using dark first,at this point its up to you if color your background at these stage, for safe technique just wash some color for your background ...let it dry for a night or two....,next stage is to fleshin up the shape of your object(try to view the portraitor the face as simple shapes sphere, cylinder and cone, for 3d effect),last stage work the details on next day....then lastly highlights will be the last...of course you have to rework each stage after the paint dry....and yes it take days or month for perfection.
