Have you ever noticed how models strut their stuff on the runway with the meanest look ever on their faces? Is this attractive? I always thought that it would look nicer to have them smile a little bit. The whole purpose of those shows is to get more people to buy the product, isn't it? Wouldn't it be more likely if the model would smile? Give your honest views.

That is what they call "FIERCE".Most models exhibit this look on the runway to have a sense of authority and presence on the catwalk. Most of them are taught to maintain being unemotional and be just plain and not minding the crowd on the sides of the runway.

No smiles allowed for European catwalk. That's the law. Only a dark, Gothic, pouty mood.
For more than 200 catwalk shows that made up the recent international collections, Jessica Ogden's and J-Lo's shows were the only two to feature smiling models.
Jessica Ogden's show was savaged by one newspaper - not for the clothes, but for the fact that the models were (shock, horror) smiling.
I wish smiling is part of catwalk.

LOL! you are so observant!! i agree with you whole heartedly. i always think that a smile can do wonders...a smile can melt the heart of many...so why do models strut around looking so fierce and cool? why can't they look happier instead of looking as if the stage is the last place that they want to be :D

Well, dining on a grape and some water and then having to vomit it up can make anyone a bit nasty! LOL
I think the ones that look happy and skip along, etc. look the best. I think the ones that look all serious are trying to go for a look and those in the industry like that look but a REAL person is the furthest thing from their minds when they're strutting the runway.
I agree a smile would put a little glamour on it all.

I think snotty is the look they wanna portray. I guess when you're wearing designer clothing you should look proud. The clothes and the skinny models are weird enough for me. I guess their market is not the masses.

How funny, I was just watching a chat show the other day where the host was kidding with a model about this very same thing. Anyway, she explained that the reason that models aren't allowed to smile is because they can't do anything to detract from the clothing that they are wearing. They have to be as expressionless as possible. This does make sense, but I still think that it would be nicer if they were allowed to smile!! ^_^
