I hate to sound dumb but this is my first year as an independent contractor and I dont know the first step in filing taxes (2007 taxes next year). Since its the beginning of the year I want to start off doing everything right so when its time to file taxes next year I will be prepared.

The only thing different is that you will (probably) receive a "1099" instead of a "w-2" to report your earnings to the IRS from your "employer", or whoever you are doing work for. Also, ABSOLUTLEY NO taxes (withholding or social security) will be withheld from your "checks" so you need to set aside approximately 20 percent of your earnings to pay those taxes next April 15th. Keep track of ALL of your expenses related to this work as most of these will be directly DEDUCTIBLE from your income and you will not have to pay tax on that part. Most years that I was an independent contractor, I actually made very little money AFTER expenses, and therefor I paid little or sometimes NO taxes !!! Good luck !!!

I can't remember exactly what tax form you have to file. However, if you check out www.irs.gov, you should be able to find a lot of information on there regarding independent contractors. I'm in the same boat. I started last year but didn't make enough to file for this year, so I've been trying to stockpile information so I know what I'll have to expect next year because I'm sure next year I'll have to file.
