I was given both of my cats they cost you enough to feed and de-flea every year anyway.
If it were a particularly exotic breed I'd consider buying one if I had the money, I've always liked Bengal cats but they don't come cheap.

It does cost a lot just to keep the cats maintained, you're right!

I've never bought a cat from a breeder, but the reason we (yes, I'm a rescuer) charge for the cat is to be sure that the person adopting the cat does want them and will take care of them. The group I'm associated with has them fixed, shots, and microchipped. The lady in charge also does a fairly extensive background check. Part of what she used the adoption fee for (besides fostering the ones she has) is to to the TNR (trap/neuter/return) of feral cats. When she catchs young ones she can sometimes "turn" them. Often a feral that has been "turned" still has some feral reactions - like running when a stranger comes in the house - but they can be excellent pets.

I'm not familiar with the microchip process. Is that recommended? and is it expensive?

Yes once I bought a blue Himalayan, from a breeder for 200.00. That cat cost me more in vet bills than any other animal I have ever owned. It was allergic to everything, She had patches of that long hair fall out from eczema, fleas, certain cat food, everything in the world bothered this cat. After the 5th kidney stone she had I put the poor thing down. They are beautiful cats but I never bought another.

They are beautiful cats. I'm sorry to hear that you had so many problems with its health. I'm glad to know that its out of pain now. Putting down animals can be so hard.

I currently have four cats, and they were all "turnups." I used to live out in "far suburbia" and the neigborhood ended in a cove with lots of sheltered land and houses on large lots. It seemed city folks thought is was a good place to dump unwanted cats. Three of my four were "semi-adult" when they showed up, already sweet box-trained animals.
Many moons ago, my ex got it in her head that she HAD to have a pedigree cat called a Ragdoll. So we got one from a breeder in Iowa (we were in Texas, at the time). He cost $300, and was really pretty, really sweet, but not very bright.

Wow..you must have really loved your ex. Texas to Iowa for a cat? They are really cute though.. I've never owned one but have saw a few. Thanks for the comment. I think turn up cats often make the best pets.

We got our cats from Petsmart who has cats from local shelters or non-profits. The cats we got were from a non-profit group. It was $75 for the adoption fee, shots, deworming, flea treatment, and spay/neuter. Well worth the money. I am sure if I had to pay for all that out of pocket it would have been much more than $75. All the shelters and pets stores that carry animals from shelters and non-profits all charges a fee. This helps them provide for the animals.

Ive never paid for a cat because I can always bring a cat home from the streets. We have lots of cats here so buying cat is not an option unless I wanted some imported cat. I just realized that whenever I go to a pet shop I seldom see cats being sold.

I paid $50 for my cat at a local pet store. They get them from local people who have kittens or they are dumped on their doorstep. The money helps pays for the shots the kittens have already been given and I think they gave us some kitty food too.

Having a cat is not a problem for me. The cat in the neighbor come to eat in my house, if I feed them well they will stay. Sometimes I put a cat in a sack and bring it to a far place so that it will not return. But they say the cat knows the way to come back. A cat meow at me as if I was his mother.

no i dont think i would pay for a cat neither, if i ever want a cat or a dog i would go to the humane society and get one, there are too many of pets over there that they have no place for them and had to put to sleep because no one take them home and they cant keep them there. it is sad
