I know you suppose to eat chicken soup when you have the flu or are ill. I do and it always helps. But my question is why? What is it about chicken soup that helps you feel better? Is it the vegetables or the chicken or the combination of both?

There are a lot of scientific researches done about a chicken soup being a rememdy for colds and flu. One such research says that a chicken soup is anti-inflammatory. Read about it here: www.unmc.edu/publicaffairs/chickensoup/newsrelease.htm Others say that the spices added to the soup, such as garlic and pepper work the same way as cough medicines plus the steam from the soup is a natural decongestant, making breathing easier.Read about it here: http://chetday.com/coldfluremedy.htm For me I think it is simply the loving care that the person gave in making the soup that heals.

I just ate minestrone soup. But that was all I had in the house. ha ha I am getting over food poisoning and couldn't eat yesterday. It seems to me that soup is soothing and helps in different ways. Usually carbs help to gain strength back. Water in the soup helps hydrate. Heat from the soup helps to open sinuses and soothe the through when one has a cold or flu. But mainly, I think we get the idea of chicken soup because of how we grew up. I am sure if someone else was fed something when they were ill growing up, it would also be something else. :)

People think chicken soup will make you feel better for the same reason that people think Mohammad is a prophet from Allah, Because somebody told them that and they read it in a book written by somebody that nobody ever heard of.

I think its because we convince ourselves that we're going to feel better after eatting it so we in turn do. I think its one of those mind over matter things. Truthfully I don't like chicken soup I prefer tomato so I guess I better not get sick lol.

I definately believe that it works, I'm just not sure why. Although researchers have not been able to prove that chicken soup helps to cure the common cold or other illnesses, doctors and researchers have developed theories to explain the apparent healing properties of this popular home remedy. Some researchers have theorized that the steam in the chicken soup may open up congested noses and throats. Others have suggested that certain natural properties inherent in chicken soup may decrease the inflammation associated with the common cold, thus providing some relief of symptoms. I also think that it provides good nutrition and comfort which themselves can help you feel better.
