I try to but then realistically speaking, most of the time, I don't think people are aware that they actually possess the very same quality that they dislike in another person.

think so ha ha ha... we are often conscious of other peoples without seeing ourselves in their foot.

There are 2 reasons why I dislike a person.
1)My values are different from theirs OR
2)the reason why I dislike them so much is because they remind me of me. Some people see the negative characteristics they have through others and that's why it's easier for them to get angry at others because they can't accept the fact that they have that quality too.

from my point of view, i'd rather not hate that person and one thing more is better that you also try not to do the things that you hate in them... let's be realistic, if we are that mad of that characteristic they have, then why do we have to do it, don't you want to be likeable?
