Exercising in the late afternoon will help you sleep. It usually makes me tired around 6pm if I exercise around 4pm. Perhaps you have so much on your mind so you don't fall asleep. It's also a good idea to watch tv lying down and just set your tv timer to 1 hour or less, I usually fall asleep fast when I lay down to watch tv.

I know the feeling and it's really hard to get over it, what works for me (sometimes) is leaving the radio on, talk shows works better than music, i just try to follow the talk so not to think of anything else and I soon fall to sleep, darkness is important for me too..

i read an article in Psychology Today about this same thing. The answer is, you are talking too much inside your head thinking too many thoughts. Too much mind chatter can keep you awake. Play soft music. Meditate by emptying your mind. Slow down your thoughts, visualize a white wall. Let your mind rest and your body will follow.

the best way for me to get rid of insomnia is to tire yourself before you sleep, do some exercise sweat it out and notice that your sleep will be much more better than ever before. try it and you will see the difference.
