HI Dear its a good question nowadays. but as i believe that if u r intrested in knowledge then go for java otherwise if u r intrested in patment then go for vb since in vb there is nothig to learn and u got better reward with less investment.
on the other hand both have captured the same portion of market and u will servive at least 10 yrs by knowing ne of them. but Java will remain always and it is more powerful than vb and it is too handy for web applications.

First of all let me tell you that Java is more difficult than .net. C# got many similarities to Java. About salary, Java professionals are paid more since they need to put extra effort while developing a project than their .net counterparts. Well, learning Java will sure land up to a high paying job, but to get into that job is very difficult. You need to have a good experience and knowledge in Java, but there are chances that you may be recruited through a campus selection and be trained in Java by the company. I think there are more opportunities for Java rather than .net.

it depends on your enjoyment which one do you enjoy the most, lets see .net can do many things so is java the demand is good but if it bores you you will not like it right, try to learn both the basic then decide which one you like the more either way they are very usuful
