My daughter experienced her own waterbirth, when my grandaughter was born, about six months ago. She found two midwives, and they came out to the farmhouse where my daughter and her husband live. There they set up a deep "child's" pool, with warm water, out on the screened in porch. We were in the middle of a heat spell. My daughter went into labor about noon that day, and she didn't get into the pool till about 2 hours before my grandaughter was born. Her husband was with her, myself and my other daughter, my son and his girlfriend were waiting outside, and her husband's father was there (he's a regular doctor). My grandaughter was born at 4:30 am in the morning, it was just getting light out, barely, and the birds were starting to sing. We had one lamp on, the midwife used a flashlight when she needed to. My daughter used no pain killers whatsoever. She was glowing, so beautiful, and when my little grandaughter came out, she swam out and flipped over and swam up between my daughter's legs looking up at her, as my daughter looked down at her. It was one of the most magical and beautiful moments of my life. A thousand yes's..that it is so so much better than a hospital. Check my profile..I have a photo of the birth...my daughter and her husband had just pulled my grandaughter out of the water up onto her chest, and they finally met eye to eye. If you can swing this at all..go for it. If you're healthy, and you can find a good midwife, and take the necessary precautions, you need to try and do this. I'm not sure about insurance covering this sort of thing, that's the only drawback. Ultimately it would be less expensive then being at the hospital, as there are no hospital fees, just the fees for the midwife. Good Luck, dear!

wow!!! that was a great experience for you and especially for your daughter. I don't have that much space here at home for the child's pool, and i'm nervous about having it here also. But hope it can really be offered or allowed by our hospital here. I'm not just sure coz I haven't heard about it here. thank you

Waterbirth can be a great thing. Make sure that the hospitals near you offer it (mine don't). You can also get a birth tub if you are planning on having the baby at home. Some people think that they want to give birth in the water but when they go into transition they want out of the water so always have a backup plan. It should be coved by medical insurance as long as the doctor that will be delivering you is covered. Good luck. Please let me know if you have anymore questions.
