You rule!!

1 Day Ruler - The unofficial crown for the Ruler for a Day.
February 18, 2007 8:45am CST
**This is not a debate, but mere sharing of opinions and ideas.** Ok here is the scenario, you are appointed as the ruler of your country for one day. Any laws or changes you make can never be reversed and would permanently stand as you dictated them. ???QUESTIONS??? 1)Would you do it? Why or why not? AND 2)What new laws or changes would you make if you did do it? ---------------------------------------------------------------- !!!There isn't any right or wrong answers, just opinions. ***Thanks to all in advance. I do not rate based on whether or not I agree, but the quality of your post. ----------------------------------------------------------------

Only one day!! I love all the different National Days that are around so I would introduce a few myself NATIONAL SMOKING DAY, See how many cigs can be smoked in one day!! NATIONAL CHOLESTEROL DAY, fried. processed, fatty unhealthy food only allowed. NATIONAL NON-PC DAY, make a Mother's Day Card, celebrate St Georges Day and let kids believe in Santa!! NATIONAL GAMBLING DAY, see how much money you can loose in one day. NATIONAL BINGE DRINKING DAY, see how many days you can loose. NATIONAL SICK DAY, everyone can pull a sicky. and NATIONAL NO NATIONAL DAY, where one day throughout the year, nothing is celebrated!!! Do you think I am in with a chance of making these new laws???

I think that I'd decline the offer to rule, as I haven't got the experience needed to undertake such a responsibility. You can't improvise yourself ruler and be sure that you make the right decisions. Those who do often become dictators, and I wouldn't want to go down in history as such an infamous character. I'm already not very popular here at myLot! ;)

I agree. I would not do a single thing differently. We bash our politicians all the time, but generally speaking they are much more qualified to do their jobs than we are. Also, the beauty of our U.S. Constitution is that there are no hard and fast rules that cannot be changed. I WOULD like to see our Congress work together more on issues, but that cannot be legislated (or at least not by the likes of me).

No I would not accept, I'm not a power/authority maniac and it's not one of my dreams to be a ruler or a president, Also I don't believe in miracle cures, and laws doesn't change much after all, we can't change the attitude and the way people think/behave.. communist rulers and dictators around the world tried to enforce all kinds of laws (some were good but most was bad) but all had to collapse sooner or later..

I don't want to be a ruler. Ruler means lots of responsibility too. For me more responsibility more pain, and I don't want pain. I would like somebody to rule who listen to me, rather than be a ruler. If I find somebody who will listen to me I definitely would sujest him/her to make health care free for every one.

All dictators are somehow 'legal', aren't they? But as I'm not American, I have no right to judge what you're doing in your country -- as long as you remain within your 'sacred' national borders! ;)

If you are suggesting I have the makings of a dictator then so be it but I'll be a legal one.

Great question... I don't want to be a dictator either, so increasing sales tax by 1% which comes to me is out of the question. I would probably make a law then that simply said, from the beginning of next year, ComedyAddict Ltd has to be the paper supplier of choice for the entire country governments. The amount of paper that gets pushed around, I'd by rich.. :)

comedyaddict! Amen to that. Suggest you include monopoly for toilet tissue rolls. 1. Useful at both ends 2. Per capita use in governments/politicians ten times the quantity of the average citizen. 3. Writing/Typing paper is a shrinking market - while the rhetoric of politicians can only grow with the number of channels available for disemination. [just made that up] 4. While recycling tax may be imposed on printing paper, it will never be imposed on toilet tissue. Dont forget to send out those party invites. This will truly make you wealth.

I would make hypocrisy a serious felony. Otherwise my kingdom would be a pretty freewheeling place. You could be rude so long as you allowed others to be rude back. You could be a slob so long as you allowed others to be neat freaks. You could lie so long as you didn't expect to be told the truth. You could eat as much or as little as you chose. Fat and skinny would both have beauty. The only thing you could not do is be a HYPOCRITE!

I have huge faith in the Democracies that have evolved. While not perfect there are reasonable checks and balances that over the long term correct imbalances in policy. We have come a long way since the ideals of the Athenian direct democracy in that Greek City-State. That form of direct democracy, became impossible as the size of the administrative unit grew. Representative government is a great thing. We elect representatives and "trust" them to act diligently and intelligently on our behalf. I would spearhead the use of technology to give every citizen a potential say in critical aspects of governance. http://www.yourbigears.com provides a platform for broad referendums that can be rolled out across a country. It is not simple - it is not easy but it is possible to provide every citizen a fool proof way of having his or her voice heard. In summary, I would modify the Representative form of Government to accomodate large scale, direct participation in governance.

If I were President of the U.S.? Abortions will be safe and legal, all but one unit of troops would come home. The last one would train our allies and then they would come home. "No child left behind" testing would be abloished. It would be replaced with a list of the basics kids need to know to graduate high school. Eash child would be tested to place them in the class that fits their ablity not by their parents bank account or race.Oh, and I would de-criminalize marriguana use. The only problem with this one is I would have the F.D.A. regulate it, so it wouldn't be as strong as the illegial stuff. And I would make sure every citizen would have health care.

Great question-- and quite tempting to do this. But I think I'd decline, as I wouldn't be comfortable with the fact that what I said could NEVER be reversed. That's too much responsibility to me. You never know what will happen in the world, so I'd want the option of things being reversed if need be. Of course, as of today there are many laws and things I'd like to see changed, but not enough to make my decisions permanent and irrevocable.

I've always thought the way the indians lived and handled their economy was genious. I would, first of all, destroy the money system. There would be no money. I find money to be highly pointless and it's the backbone to most problems in the world. Our source of clothes, and food, and transportation would be based on trade, or self,,creation, I guess you could say. Actually, I would take away automobiles and trains and subways and all those big transportation devices. This would eventually take care of the major issues involving pollution, obesity, gas prices, crashes, etc. I wouldn't want to be called a ruler and I wouldn't want to make decisions on my own. The sociey would work as one and make decisions together. I would change so many things it's ridiculous.

I would abolish the caste bias system in my country and top class education will be granted to the poorest children.I will allocate funds for research and development and retrench the unnecessary allowances politians enjoy like free limousines, junkets etc..,There will only be a two party system as in the US and I would abolish all other small parties that burgeoned from nowhere.I would abolish child labour and child marraige in my country.I would charter the establishmnt of more standard academic institutes. Finally I would(as iam a student)would abolish exams!

Now, this is a hard one - assuming you do not decline; and I am inclined to decline, too. Anyway, let's try to work around this: My first instinct actually was to repeal the law that says all laws are permanent and cannot be reversed. That is, if that would be possible. It is hard to imagine new laws coming into being and contradictory policies still in place. Separability clause, is it? I'm not an expert... but this is interesting to ponder. :) it was fun reading all the comments, too.

ok if i was ruler for a day (of the UK) I would promise to bring all of our army out of iraq by August, then i would make it illegal to build any more oil or gas power plants and promise to make at least 50% of energy be produced by renewable sources by 2015. Finally on a personal note i would scrap tuition fees from universities. I would then go to the EU and have a long rant about the French and the common agricultural policy and how the French should stop blaming the UK for the Shi* the EU is in and realise that they are the ones bancrupting it.

Wooooooo!!! A day for my country would make a real big difference!!! It would be impossible for me to do so many things in just one day. So that the first thing that I shall be doing is to pass a law appointing myself as ruler of my country until I finish the "cleansing stage" of our government. 2. I have so many things in mind. Majority wll hate me for this...but they can not do anything for the law that I passed could no longer be reversed. Whether they like it or not...the people must follow. In the next days of my being an appointed ruler... I will retire all the incumbent cabinet members and public officials, and replace them with college graduates who are proven to be of good moral character. I shall give them benefits where no amount of bribery would move their loyalty and dedication to public service. With this new breed, we will build a self-sufficient government, operating under a Constitution that compels everyone to strictly follow its provisions. If this happens, the whole country shall be freed from graft and corruption. From hereon, we will start educating the people to be real good citizens by being honest at all times. It will take time... But it is attainable. Those who fail to follow the constitution will suffer the consequences as stated in its provisions. I shall appoint my successor who, in turn will be tasked to continue my cause without fail. 3. Then, I can retire...whew!!!

Hm..at first I'd want to decline. But then I'd figure, well..it's only a day right? So then I'd rule that anyone with a real religion can have a symbol on gravestones or plaques..since that seriously needs done, and people've been dragging their feet stubbornly over it. Aaand..I'd create a nonprofit program, which would get all the money it needed from the government (since they really don't need it), to help people who're doing super poorly and haven't been able to get any help to get back on their feet. I'd make sure schools would never exist again, and that all children would have to be taught at home, either by their parents, legal gaurdian, or by special personal teachers. I don't think I'd do anything else, 'cause I'm not sure if it'd be wise for ME to try to fix anything else.

1) Yes, I would do it, because I know that I could make everyone happy. 2)The laws would become eye for an eye on practically everything. this would keep population down, and the urban community less crowded (as there would be more room) so there would be no ghetto, just an urban and suburban community. Secondly, martial arts would be established as the city/national sport, not any style in particular, but by the age of 10, all citizens would need to begin taking classes and continue to take them for at least one year. Instructors would be carefully monitored to protect the safety of young children and the purity of the practice. And there would be no national religion, and a very small government. Ah yes..and there would be free trade with all outside countries. There would be no currency, and the people would refer back to the old way of trading personal belongings and such things.

For me, i will not accept the offer. Eventhough it would be a great opportunity to be a ruler of a country even for just one day. Because before accepting any offer, you must be very careful on making any decision. Think first what might be the risk and the effect to the people around you. Just like on the given scenario, any move made would be permanent and there's no turning back. I don't wanna be a dictator to other people. Let's say you're not the appointed one and you will be under that ruler, for sure you wouldn't want to become dictated. People have their own minds and personal will to decide for themselves and no matter what happen they still have the prerogative to act based on laws and norms of the society.
