Why do we judge before we get to know the person?

We have been told on many accounts to never judge a book by its cover, they may surprise you. Yet everything we see someone we always judge that person before we even know them.
i wanted to bring this up because i like to wear punk/goth clothing but inside, im really a nice person, i help out around the community, i even have a kid im supporting half-way around the world. those that know me, love me and think im too generous and that one day, someone is going to take advantage of me. i may dress punk/goth style just because i like it but im a very nice person. so why do people always judge me before they even get to know me?

This is one thing that I have come to hate about society in general. I love making new friends and am not one to judge on how someone looks, their race, religion, what music they listen to, what kind of clothes they wear.
I think that alot of it does have to do with what people are "taught" to believe or the surroundings that they were brought up in and some of it might even have to do with the media..
Like with the whole thing of someone dressing goth or punk. They see these people as being dark, evil, mean people. There are many movies that show "goth" people (even if they aren't technically goth, just like black, lol) as weird, anti-social nuts that hate people and only want to be around people that are goth.. And people take that from the movies, sadly.
There are many people out there like that, but there are also many out there that AREN'T like that. Let the people see that you are a nice person on the inside, no matter how you may dress, people will come around and see that the saying "Never judge a book by it's cover" is VERY true.
