When's the best time to go to New Zealand? I've always wanted to go, but either time or finances have never matched. I've heard that that part of the world is bitterly cold in July. So should I plan a "winter" (I live in the United States) vacation for New Zealand, and if so, how much would it cost flying out from most likely New York or Atlanta? Thanks.

Thanks. Any particular area of New Zealand you recommend? I love nature and the environment.

I'm also from the states, and I was in NZ in December. It was summer there, but I have to say that it rained....ALOT! I think they told us it was a recod year for rain. But if you are thinking of going at that time, just be sure to check the temperature and rainfall. I only brough one pair of pants and ended up having to wear them a lot! Thankfully many of the places we stayed had washing machines in the complexes.
That said, it is a beautiful and amazing place. I think I perfered the South Island. I wish we could have spend more time there.
Not sure of the cost these days, but it's not cheap. Do you have any frequent flyer miles? I flew from the east coast too, you fly to LA and then switch to a flight to NZ. it's a long flight but some Dramimine made it easier.

South Island is Beautiful.. Try Hiking from the Top of the North Island to the Bottom of the South.. Go to Matamata where they filmed Hobbiton off LOTR.. You can pretty much go anywhere in NZ to avoid the Rat Race of the Cities.. I would recommend starting from the TOP and working your way down.. :)

Without a doubt the best time is January to February. It is now the hottest time of the year, and if you enjoy the beach and water sports, this is the time to be here!
Airfares would generally be around a thousand dollars return.
In winter, snowfall is prevalent in many areas for a couple of months, but more so in the Southern Alps, where skiing is popular in and around Queenstown.
Every season has something different to offer, so it remains a personal preferance.
