Mylot - Is The Well Running Dry?

I decided this weekend to try to post fifty responses a day while I still have the time. I went everywhere: Hot Topics, Top Discussions, Discussions with No Response etc? I picked my Friends Discussions dry. (Did find a couple little jewels there that I'd missed.) Still I am no where near my goal. At one point yesterday, it took me an hour to find five discussions worth response.
The problem is finding discussions that interest me. I'm not so picky as some Mylotians. A good survey question will do fine. Still, I'm not finding much.
Is it possible we're reaching the point where everthing has been said? With over 70,00 members whouldn't there be more rather than less to respond to? Is this a permanent situation or just a dry spell?
Do you think maybe Mylot should encourage ongoing discussions by rewarding points to topic posters who reply to the answers on their discussions and keep things going?

I've noticed that as well. And I don't think it's because people have run out of things to say, but that with an influx of people all scrambling to make a buck, we're in a phase of quantity instead of quality. People are posting hundreds of crap discussions a day, and the good stuff is being pushed back or good users are just giving up and throwing their hands up in disgust.
I know that I've had a few days where I've just shook my head and gone away, disheartened by the sudden flood of ridiculous, poorly thought out discussion topics.
But this too shall pass.

Actually, I've never said the posts were terrible. I just said they didn't interest me enough to respond and I don't think I'm hard to please. As a point of fact, I don't think the posts are necessarily terrible, there just are not enough of them that are up my alley and I think that with all the new members there should be more variety.

Well personally I think some of it is the day, some days you can find better discussions then other days. I don't know if it's how they come up in the searching or if people had better ideas. I also think it depends on us. I've read several good posts today but I can't think what to add to it. I've also read some and think ok that's nice but nah I'll see what else I can find to post to. It's one of those I don't want to think days I suppose. On these days it makes it very hard to find ones to reply to. It's not that they aren't there just my mind isn't set right I suppose.

Right, I think some of it may have to do with my mind set. I've sometimes gone back to things I passed over earlier and found good discussions.

When I have one of these good days and I dont have the time to answer them I file them for later when there is a boring day.

I think you're onto something here. There have been days when I find tons of good topics but pass them over, thinking "I don't really know what I want to say to that." So maybe part of the issue is the person looking and not just the topics that are out there.

You know, it seems to vary wildly by the day. Yesterday I had a real tough time finding anything to respond to and after a full day here had less than 20 responses. Then today, I have only been around for a couple of hours and already have surpassed what I did yesterday. It would be cool if they could figure out a way to keep the more interesting posts and discussion starters near the top of the pages with some sort of sticky or something like they have in forums.

I've been having problems with this as well and I know other people are too because there have been discussions on this. There is too much junk to go through to find the good discussions and I end up giving up and logging off for awhile. I have been trying to reach 400 and it's just too hard to do right now. There are still some good discussions on here but some of them I have nothing to say to because I can't relate to them. I hope I have better luck today though because I really like it here and I don't want to have to give up. I would post some discussions myself but right now I really have nothing of interest to talk about. :)

I hope you both hang in there as I intend to.
I just took a look at the discussion on cooperative economics and it is anything but junk. It comes under the heading of things I don't know too much about but I took a stab at adding a response. Don't be too hard on me but correct any mistakes I made, okay.

A new commer, I am wondering whether my Topic: "Cooperative Economics" is considered JUNK. I have had only one response to-date.

I know they are releasing some changes so it will be MUCH easier to find discussions from your interests. Also they are bringing in some other exciting content.
I hear that from a good source - should happen in a few weeks.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that "everything has dried up," but what I've noticed is that the people I think of as "good writers" (i.e. post interesting discussions and reponses, and serve as good "topic hosts") seem to put a lot more effort into posting responses than into posting new discussions.
I have't even been here that long (and, granted, I don't have all that much time for this), and I am SURE I have never posted 50 responses in a single day... perhaps because I don't respond to things that don't interest me. Maybe that makes me a bad "myLot Citizen," I don't know.

I think your citizenship is in good order. The 50 postings was just a personal goal that I set for no reason other than that I thought I had the time. Ididn't and I fell very short. One of my friends set a goal of a hundred a day for the heck of it last Sunday and she made it. It took her almost ten hours and her back aches from sitting so long at the computer. My own best remains around 30 a day. Iusually only post once a week. Maybe I'll set a goal to post two discussions a week. At least that might be achieveable. LOL

Maybe this site is getting saturated or some of the good posters are taking a short break. And it doesn't necessarily mean that each one of the 70,000 strong crowd is writing something; most of them have registered, scribbled a few lines and disappeared into the oblivion. Let's hope something nice happens to this site and thank you for pointing this out
Cheers!

sometimes i guess there is really a dearth of topics to answer.well there are so many forums over the net and i guess the contorversila and hot topics have been discussed too much by now.unless there is a new story or news i guess we will have to depend upon our experiences of daily life and daily incidents.and setting a target of 50 is a very high target i guess.start a few discussions of your own.that might help

A couple of people mentioned the possiblity of a news event bringing new discussions but If it's a big enough story, we'll be deluged with postings on one topic. That will bring another flood of postings to wade through.

Each of us go through this dry spell once in a while irisheyes. I used to crib about the same thing often before but now I've found more ways to spot good discussions. When you can't find anything that interests you in the usual sections of myLot, try this! Pick a friend and go to the discussions they've responded to. You will be surprised at the number of discussions you will find there that you hadn't come across before. You are simply taking the assistance of a friend (well we all are here to help each other right?) and if you can't find anything there either, hop to another friend's list ;o) I do this often nowadays, saves a lot of time and the trouble of looking for discussions myself. Thanks to all my friends!:)

What a great question! I have only been here for a few months and I haven't scraped the bottom yet. I am still trying to go back and name "best responses" to several of my discussions. You do make a valid point and I will try to think of a survey question.~Donna

It's been becoming harder for me too... I don't post as much as I used to because I've been extremely busy... but also because it takes so long to find good topics sometimes. Some people keep posting the same lame topics... I don't mind replying to good topics, but hate the lame ones....
I'm trying to think of some good ones to come up with, but that's hard too... hopefully we'll get some new topics today!

I ask myself the same question too. There are days when I have to turn my computer off after failing to find a good discussion to respond to. I often wonder too why mylot allows unthought of discussions to float around for days i.e. suyvey types and those answerable with yes or no. An earlier comment above said a new feature will be introduced soon and I really look forward to that. Unlike some other users who are also working on some other sites, I have only mylot and I really don't want this to lose its appeal. I hope this is just one of those 'bad days' or dry spells.

Yes, I'm having another 'bad day dry spell' here today similar to the one on the day I posted this discussion. Thanks for making me feel not alone.

I think that your idea of rewarding people who keep their own discussions going is great. I think that one problem right now is that people don't feel that they get paid much for replying to their own topics - heck, for a long time I thought that we didn't get paid for that, since we don't get more points by our username when we do it. But then one day I was really upset and was replying to people who were being supportive of me when I really needed it, and I found out that I did earn money that day. I think that it would be nice if we did get points for replying, even if it was only half a point per time or something.
I know what you mean with what you were saying about finding it harder to find things to reply to, too. After about a month and a half on the site and over 3000 points by my name, it's getting difficult for me, too. And then I try starting topics and get someone mad at me for what they think is stealing their topic, when I hadn't even seen their topic at the time, and wasn't even asking the exact same question as they were. My stomach feels sick. I can't stand confrontation. Sometimes Mylot almost isn't worth it, I feel so sick right now. But you know, I really have met amazing people here. So I'll stay around, not only because I need the money.

I haven't had anybody accuse me of stealing a discussion yet but I know what you mean about confrontation. I got into a few political and defending my country type discussion that left me tied up in knots. Don't know what I'm going to do if Hilary Clinton is nominated because I'm a huge supporter and I know the debating is going to be the dirtiest ever. There's no way I'll be able to keep my mouth shut. Maybe I should stop avoiding the political stuff and let Mylot toughen me up.

Don't you feel tired if you post fifty responses a day.if you just want to earn money,i think that it's not nessery for you to answer too much discussion.

Actually, the fifty postings a day was a personal goal kind of thing that had nothing to do with money. If I answered 100 posts a day here, I wouldn't make enough to buy a large cappucino at the Starbucks in my neighborhood. The money on Mylot is almost completely irrelevant.

I find myself slowed down from time to time, and I do respond to comments in my discussion, just not every one. I sent a pm to myLot regarding comments on responses, and the fact that there are no ongoing discussions to speak of, as they're not paid. The response was that they will consider it. Someone else can ask.

I know what you mean I am hard pressed to find quality discussions all the time that is why I have a very good friends list and I do all their discussions first cause I know they are good discussions. But there is a lot of garbage of mylot. These questions of a few words. But what can you do. I guess you have to weed through it. I don't set a goal though. Then I feel like I have to try to hard. I just come on here when I have the spare time and answer some here and there. Now I just sat down here this morning with some time before the kids got up. I think I've done about 14-15 something like that. But I don't put the pressure on to do a certain amount a day. Now maybe later there will be more good stuff to respond to and maybe there won't be.

Its been hard to find good discussions to post respond to. Discussion topics have been repeated in almost all categories. I am not picky as well, but I do intend to respond with posts that are of my interest and logical.
I think the issue here is people who start discussions without reading those existing ones that have the same topic. Another would be the tags that we attach to our posts so that it will be accessible to more people.

I AM FEELING INSANE! I post at least 32 comments Friday-Saturday. And on Saturday I had made $1.02. I posted the SAME amount, some with huge replies NO one liners. And yesterday I made $.52. Oh tell me why PLEASE!!!!
I decided, since it doesnt matter what I posts, I will just relax and post around 20 comments a day. I WONT force out 25 or more work my butt off to find that I make less that I should have!
I dont know if the well is dry. I have been here 3 weeks. For me its still wet. I'll get back to you once (if I) I reach almost 1000 :)

I think there are lots of interesting discussions here in myLot. And I always find a way to answer them. Don't worry, keep searching for better discussions. My favourite discussions are about books, so I'm always on the reading page.
If you want quality discussions, why don't you start some of them yourself?

Yes, I answer the books discussions a lot also. I don't think books will ever go out of fashion. Thank God for that. I sell them for a living.
