*nods* I agree that it's a very personal thing. Now that I think of it, I've always been a bit annoyed at those pagans that used their magical names everywhere. It seems like it would have so much less power that way. I suppose I should be less judgemental, but it just seems a little silly to me.

I looked it up.... for those of you reading this and not knowing what it meant, like me.
When someone has completed a year and a day of intensive study and practice, it is customary to take on a magical name when you perform an initiation ceramony. This name should be a personal reflection of you. Some new Witches choose a name of a Goddess or God that they feel reflects who they are, what they strive for or a deity that they feel strongly drawn to. Most Witches feel very strongly that one shouldn't presume to take on the name of a Goddess or God, as they are basically saying they embody everything that God/dess stands for. And logically speaking, we aren't God/desses. That being said, I highly recommend that you don't.
Many chose the name of a totem animal, while others simply find one that they just feel is right for them. Once you have chosen a name, the only people who should know what it is, is your coven mates. If you don't belong to a coven, then no one should know your magickal name but you. Under no circumstances should it be revealed to anyone. No going around to your friends and telling them what it is so you can hear them tell you how cool it sounds. That's just stupid. Your magical name is meant to be revieled only to the deities you work with during magick and mundane rituals...period. This is how they will know you, and if you're in a coven, how they too, will know you. But that's it. If you''ve already told people your secret magickal name, I suggest you keep it as an internet handle, and choose a different magickal name immediately. Make sure that you let the dieites you work with know what your new name is.
Some go one step further, and make sure that their new name is numerically correct for them. This is done through numerology. To find your birth number and thus find if your name is numerically correct, use the following popular guide line.
Find your birth number. If you were born on February 21, 1967, you would find your number like this 2.21.1967 = 2+2+1+1+9+6+6 =
Bring this down to a single digit : 2+8 = 10
Then your birth number is 10
Then find the name number of the magical name you have chosen. This is done by equating all the letters of the alphabet with the first nine numbers using this table.

i belong to hindu religion. the name selection of everybody out here happens in almost a magical fashion.
firstly based on the time of birth, location etc. they come up with the phonetic sounds that are best suited for the kid.
then based on the ancestors etc they come up with the traits which the kid has inherited
using the mix and match of the two they come up with the name.
u can call the name magical by these standards.. but since the same thing happens to everyone... there is nothing special about it

I appreciated much (and agreed) what you said.
Yes, there is nothing special, but you must admit that it's very charming....
So you belong to Hindu religion.... I respect deeply your religion, you are lucky, your roots are very ancient, you could defend your religion from Islam and Christian (with English invaders) attacks.
I'm happy that a Hindu person likes these Pagan subjects, infact it seems that - even if your religion is very far and different from mine - our religions are connected because we have something in common.

Well, but what's a magical name?
Five years ago an American nice woman fell in love for me and sent me a lot of presents. In her parcel post I found two books, one is "The complete book of Magical names" by Phoenix McFarland, Llewellyn publications.
At page xi there is written: "Many Pagans, especially Wiccans, choose a special name called a magical name which, in essence, is a name for the magic part of themselves. As pagans, many of us have come to learn the power of the magical name. It is more than a "cool" name, it is a very powerful magical tool."
I hope these words are useful to you, if not, tell me and I look for other definitions in my book.

Hello FrancyDafne! I found this discussion interesting, but I didn't know what magical names mean. But after reading some responses to your this discussion and your responses to them, I have understood a bit about it. I am just curious to know that do everybody of your religion have magical names? Do they really work?

I am not wiccan or a "pagan" but I have had my magikal name now for over twenty years, and unlike some of the responders of your post I do not beleive it is bad to reveil it. To konw a name is to have power over that name is true, But not true with magikal names, becouse a magikal name is hermetic or sealed. It is beyound the realm of the mundain. Yes I agree everyone should be able to keeo their name secret if they wish, Never suggested that they could not, I just said for me it is not a problem. The languge is hebrew, And the translation is "son of the limitless light" I am not in anyway seying a per sons name should not be secret if that is what they wish to do. Sorry if I was confussing about that.

I have a name that I'm really found of. I guess you could consider that my magickal name. I really like Willow and I use that pretty often. Lady Willow sometimes and other's just Willow.

I have more than one in a way. I have one that I've been using since I was a child, that very few people know. Then I've had others that I have used in covens through the years. I don't really like sharing my "real" name, hence having a second one. That second one has changed over time as I have changed, and it's a nice way for me to recognize my evolution as a spiritual being.
I think the "magical name" is an interesting thing, because there are so many people that just kind of randomly slam things together to use. There are others that give a lot of thought to their magical names, and I know several that have changed their names as they changed too.
