Does literature help?

I am not a voracious reader, but i do read whenever i feel like doing nothing. Some of my friends are crazy about some books, as you name them and they will certainly come up with certain responses. Two years back, when i was struggling with some personal problems, then someone suggested me to read some good books and firmly said that by reading you would certainly feel comfortable, as literature is the relfection of our day-to-day lives. I took this suggestion seriously and read some of most popular books by some celebrated authors. Surprisingly, after a few months i found that i was growing intellectually, but as far as other things are concerned, i was literally the same person. Then, i came up with my own conclusion that any reading is good just for the enjoyment, but nothing can help until we face the real troubles. I am not sticking to this perception, as i might be wrong. Do you think that reading literature makes us good person or a stong person? What do you think?

I think that reading could inspire us in our lives. It may not be a huge life changer, but I do think there could be minor changes. Maybe someone reading a non-fiction story will be influenced or inspired positively.
I haven't had a major change in my life when I read, but reading does help stimulate my brain.
